R2-D2 vs. Yoda
A little late night blogging...

I was watching The Empire Strikes Back this evening. I've discovered that having seen the prequels, you end up then viewing the original movies in a different light.

Tonight, the scene where Yoda meets Luke and R2 caught my attention. Yoda has not revealed his identity and is kind of testing and feeling out Luke. In exchange for his services in helping to find "Yoda," Yoda decides to help himself to one of Luke's possessions. He settles on the lamp. Luke asks for it back, and the R2 attempts to snatch it from Yoda.

What do you think Yoda and R2 were thinking? They should recognize each other. They encountered each other at the end of Revenge of the Sith. R2 did not get a memory wipe like C-3P0. Yoda may not recognize R2 as there are thousands of similar astromech droids running around the galaxy.

Sure, this is likely a continuity problem. However, if you watch the scene and look at Yoda's expression after beating R2 with the stick and how quickly R2 gives up, I can't help but wonder, with my prequel glasses on, if perhaps they were having a little fun with each other at Luke's expense.

Bye the way, if you have read The Dark Nest trilogy, you know that R2 purposely withheld information about Anakin and Padme from Luke for a number of years.

It certainly is plausable, and I would think r2 definitely knew Yoda as droids dont forget, but agree to Yoda R2 may have been just another R2 unit as thousands were used during that period.

Great blog!

I bet Artoo thought he was a fraud. This COULDN'T be the real Jedi Master Yoda! He seems crazy and is living in this horrible swamp. It makes you think twice about the scene where Artoo raises himself up to see inside Yoda's hut. I thought he was curious about Jedi training, but he's probably trying to make sure Yoda is who he says he is. Imagine how it blew his circuits when he finally heard Obi-Wan's voice, if that was confirmation, nothing would be.

with my prequel glasses on, if perhaps they were having a little fun with each other at Luke's expense. Ha! I love it!! :^O

The Dark Nest Trilogy was hauntingly intriguing to me, as was Tatooine Ghost. Loved 'em both.

Imagine how it blew his circuits when he finally heard Obi-Wan's voice, if that was confirmation, nothing would be. Artoo is just so smooth....if Mace were a droid, he would've been Artoo! :p

Great entry! :D

I too look at the OT in a whole different light now, which I really enjoy because it is the same old trilogy that I grew up loving, yet it's not the same, it's... deeper and much more complex.

if perhaps they were having a little fun with each other at Luke's expense.
:^O Yeah. I never thought of it that way. I was thinking that R2 was probably miffed at what an arse Yoda was being behaving in the way that he did.

if Mace were a droid, he would've been Artoo!
:^OWell put Mof2!

Great blog.:)

I was wondering the same thing the other day.
R2 had to have known who Yoda was.
Now R2 was clever, but here is a thaught for you.... did Obi-Wan program something
into R2 that told him "not" to remember who was who. ?:|

things that make us go hum....................

I prefer to believe that Artoo knew everything and it's the story of "Why didn't you tell me?" Answer: "Because you never asked."

Hmmmm . . . did they recognize each other? Good question.

People ask the same about Obi-wan's and R2's encounter on Tatooine.

Hard to say.

I think it's plausible that R2 did not recognize Yoda, for the simple fact that quite a long time had elapsed, and, in that time, he may have had a memory wipe himself. There's no way to know for certain that he didn't, just because it wasn't mentioned at the end of ROTS. Regarding the info R2 retained deep within his rusty innards - he protected that all these years. That doesn't mean he necessarily would have protected info about the identity of everyone he met.

Good blog!

Wow thats a good one. I recall Corran Horn's droid Whistler took the 'you never asked route' in the Rogue Squadron books - that's always a possibility.

I like to think that Yoda was used to guarding sensitive information - such as the Death Star plans. He may have recognized Yoda but figured it was up to Yoda to reveal the truth to Luke.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Based on the EU materials, I'm fairly certain that R2 did not receive any memory wipes prior to our introduction to him in Episode I. I think he new the value of the information he carried and the consequences of revealing what he knew. C-3P0 was always somewhat oblivious to the effect his words had on people, so I could see why he would get a memory wipe.

If R2 really wanted the lamp, he could have done more (like shocking Yoda)....I think he knew what the potential consequences would be if he did that.
