After having written my last blog entry about the one change I'd like to see to
Revenge of the Sith, and reviewing many of the great comments that followed, I began to wonder what it would have been like to watch all six movies in Episode order.
The first thing that came to mind was the impact of the Vader vs. Obi-wan duel in
A New Hope. Through the three previous episodes, Obi-wan had been the hero. After watching him defeat Darth Maul in Episode I and Anakin in Episode III, I can only imagine how shocking it would have been to see him die in Episode IV.
The next thing I thought of would have been the surprise at watching how some of the relationships work out. When watching Vader interrogate Leia, the viewer would know that she was his daughter. Chewbacca shows up in the Mos Eisley cantina, the sidekick to a smuggler after having helped Yoda escape from Kashyyyk. What about the trench run when Vader finally lines Luke up in the crosshairs of his TIE fighter?
The Death Star, which we catch a glimpse and a hint of as a hologram in Episode II, and then the beginnings of its construction in Episode III, is a full fledged technological terror constructed by the Empire in Episode IV. Would you have wondered exactly what the thing was until you finally saw Episode IV?
Then, there are things like the "truth, from a certain point of view." Remember when Luke asks Obi-wan how his father died? Remember Obi-wan's response? What would your reaction have been if you knew the truth and then heard Obi-wan say, "Darth Vader betrayed and murdered your father"?
Seeing as how Star Wars is so firmly entrenched in pop culture, I doubt anyone could ever pull off this off as an experiment. Chances are, anyone who hasn't seen the movies still has some idea of who Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are. As mentioned in a comment in my previous blog, "I am your father" is a fairly well known line. Still, it'd be interesting to find out.
