Iconic voices - who would make your list?
I marked this original trilogy, but I'll probably range a bit on this. I recently read a newspaper article about the iconic voices in film. Obviously, James Earl Jones was on that list. His voice was as much a part of my childhood through the original trilogy as my own parents' voices. It is so easy to conjure his voice in my mind. The author of the article listed some of what he considers iconic voices, but I didn't agree with much of the list. For one thing, the author is from an older demographic than I.

Not many of the iconic voices in my memory are American. Maybe our accent is just too bland to my ears. Maybe it's the differing background. Most American actors have their roots in TV, either through commercials or through series. There is no need for a deep, resonant voice in television. It seems more non-American actors get their start in theater, where projection is key.

Patrick Stewart is one of my favorite voices. His voice is so rich and resonant. It's just a pleasure to listen to him. His background is in theater.

Liam Neeson has a distinctive voice. You can pick his voice out in a few words even when it is visually attached to a lion. We have his reading of "The Polar Express," and we enjoy it at Christmas time.

Going back to the theater background, James Earl Jones got his start in a small theater in rural Michigan. He went into drama to help with a stutter. Amazing to think that he had issues with stuttering.

There are many actors that I like for their performances, but those don't fall into the 'iconic voice' catagory because they are verbal chameleons. Ewan McGregor or Johnny Depp are examples of this non-category. I've seen them with too many different accents in too many movies to say "THIS is the actor's voice."

I find it odd that I can't think of a single female voice that I would call iconic. Maybe it's because I am a woman and like those deep voices.

Who would make your list? Maybe you can even come up with some women for me ;)
