Bugs, lots of Bugs
I just finished reading the Dark Nest Trilogy and I must say............

.......................
.......................
.......................

Hm? Oh, sorry, fell asleep. There were some good things. Jacen continues to be one of my favorite EU characters and I was thrilled to see little Alanna. Saba Sebatyne's becoming one of my favorites as well.

However, there were a lot more bad IMO:

I was disappointed with how the Jedi just can't seem to work together. I'm tired of reading pages and pages of Jedi Masters arguing and arguing and arguing. I miss Yoda, Mace, and the rest of em being so much more under control.

Sure I love the movie characters, but I'm hoping LOTF is like the NJO and then some. I'd like to see all the EU characters take over basically. I think the end of the NJO would've been a great point for Han and Leia to take a step back and watch from the stands.

I'm hoping Dark Nest was like a final salute to the big three and now their kids will take up the pages. For too long it's felt like we've been frozen in time with the same ones doing everything. Stop the time freeze and let the rising stars take over.

The Killiks. There were very few instances when I actually enjoyed anything Killik. I liked Jaina's Wuluw translators in TSW, but that's about it. I was kinda hoping for a nice speciecide.

I also found TJK to be the most boring of the three. I noticed in some of those "rank your top ten books" type threads and blogs quite a few folks really liked TJK. Maybe I'm missing why it was so great, but I think it was rather just finally seeing the OT characters again after all these prequel novels.

I also finished the NJO shortly before reading these so perhaps that has something to do with it. I really liked the NJO and I felt the Yuuzhan Vong were good enemies.

Oh yes, Tarfang and Jae Juun. I LOVED THESE GUYS! I never knew how much I wanted to read about a cussing Ewok until I did. I was grinning ear to ear when they showed up in TUQ (I think it was TUQ) in their bug suits. I hope they have many more appearances.

I agree on the Joiner King being not as good as I'd hoped. The most interesting part for me was when Jacen and company search through the rubble, revealing the fates of Raynar and the Dark Jedi from Star by Star. I have to say, it's ending was really exciting though with the whole fight through the Dark Nest. The second two books didn't keep me intrigued as much as I'd hoped either.

I have a question for all of you out there with these different Star Wars books, where do you get them? Barnes and Noble? I don't have any money to buy any right now but it would be nice to know more about Star Wars then what I do. And also, sorry about not knowing this, what is the EU. I don't know some of these things. Good books I'm sure.

Best Wishes

EU stands for Expanded Universe, it's everything non-movie. You can pick up SW books at bookstores like Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc. Amazon as well. If you want to know what happens, but not have to read all the books then pick up the New Essential Chronology which covers just about everything.

I was pretty disappointed with the Dark Nest books, but less for what happened than what didn't.

I liked th writing, the story flow (for what story was told) was ok, but it didn't DO anything. It actually seemed like what I would call a small, regional "brush fire" situation.

I was ok with the dissension in the ranks of the Jedi, too. Except that we got half a resolution. Luke came up with a plan and took the first steps, but again, no resolution.

I understand they needed to leave some stuff for LotF, but come on. Like any good movie that you KNOW has sequels coming, you still need to make it a good stand-alone. That's what was missing here...

As a side note to my comment, I know the TALKED about the Killik situation spreading to the rest of the galaxy, it just didn't SEEM like it...

I can also add that I like the killik stuff all being palindromes, though...

too bad you didnt like it much. im not up to dark nest yet, hopefully i will before too many of the LOTF books come out.

a final salute to the big three

i doubt they can be killed off per se, because of the character copyrights i would guess. but it would be good to see some of the legacy books focus more on the new charcaters and leave the big 3 out. something like what the TV show is planned to be.

is anyone else sort of freaked out by the "operation swarmer" that the bush administration enacted in iraq? sounds too much like the swarm war to me (but probably having lessto do with bugs in iraq) :p

Face the facts: as long as they still breath, the "big three" (I assume you're talking about Han, Leia, and Luke) are going to do whatever they can to help their family and friends....and the entire galaxy, for that matter. They are the Heros of the Galaxy. (see second post below for more).

Luke is the renowned Hero of the Jedi, and as such he cannot let the Jedi Order fall apart, or allow and Jedi to go rampaging across the galaxy using the Dark Side....

Leai is the Hero of Diplomacy, and cannot allow the galaxy to fall into chaos. She will do whatever she can to prevent war, but if war comes she is not afraid to fight for her loved ones.

Han is the Hero of War. He does not hesitate to fly straight into battle and attack an entire enemy fleet by himself. He would run head-on into an entire army armed with only a blaster if he could help the galaxy by doing so, and he DOES so.

Sorry for double post! Too much for just one. Gee, I do that a lot, don't I? Guess I just have a lot to say....

Jacen continues to be one of my favorite EU characters...

Huh? We ARE talking about the same Jason, aren't we? Jacen Solo? You mean the WIMP who would sit down and let the Yuuzhan Vong take over the entire galaxy because he doesn't like to use the force for violence? And yet he would throw the galaxy into an insanely huge war just to protect his daughter. Wow. You have some strange role models....

I never said he was my role model. I hated Jacen pre-torture. I like how he blurs light and dark together. Pre-torture Jacen would've never did what he did to Ta'a Chume, but this Jacen is different... and I love it!

Yeah, I guess he's ok. But I still think he's a little twisted. Maybe he'll go to the dark side. Or just go insane....:p

Hi Gang,

I just joined the club and I love reading everyone's comments and idea's. Some of the SW books that I have read I got out of the library and some I bought at Barnes and Noble. I read the first Dark Nest book and I didn't like it, so I didn't bother with the other two novels.
But I'm looking forward to other stores on the big three. :)

I agree with ssgorik, the dark nest trilogy was boring as compared to even the thrawn trilogy, i also did not like how lomi could become such a match for luke. I am glad that leia finally decided to become a jedi and i liked jacen's further developement in his views of the force.
