Celebration 4 - To Go Or Not To Go?
I have to admit, when I got from Celebration 3, I was still a bit... miffed about the whole thing. Now, almost a year later, I can look back at it and say that I did have a good time.

But (and there's always a but, isn't there?) it was a pain in the... butt. My typical day went something like this: wake up early (earlier than I would wake up if I was home and had to go to work... what kind of vacation is this? Then again, it always works out like that when you're on vacation, doesn't it? But I digress...), eat breakfast, stand in line to get into convention center (and that was a long line), stand in line to enter dealer room, stand in line for (insert product here), stand in line for lunch, stand in line for (insert exhibit here), stand in line for (insert presentation here)... you get the picture.

That was how it went, day after day. Except for the second day there, when I actually waited outside the convention center, in the cold, pouring rain (and trust me when I say, it was pouring) at 3am with my friend Jason so we could be the "first" ones to get on the line for the C3 store and dealer room to get the GG Sandtrooper bust exclusive. Needless to say, I put "first" ones in quotes because it turns out that after waiting outside in the cold rain for seven hours, we enter the convention center only to find that hundreds of people who have "special" passes (press, exhibitor, dealer, etc.) were allowed in early and were all waiting on the lines already. Thanks for that, great idea!

Anyway, after that fiasco (although I have to say, I actually did get my GG Sandtrooper bust that morning, thanks to the fact that I actually knew two of the guys standing outside the dealer room closer up to the front of the line who let me cut in. Shhhh!! But I never made it into the C3 store - the average wait was pretty much the entire day - about 9 hours), can you believe that I'm even contemplating going all the way out to L.A. next year so I can do all that over again? OK, maybe I won't have to wait outside in the cold, since it's L.A., but still...

For one thing, airfare is going to be more costly, because it's a longer flight. Another thing - I'm sure the hotels in L.A. are going to be more costly than the hotels in Indiana were. Plus, from what I'm hearing, the L.A. center isn't really close to any kind of hotels, so you're probably looking at renting a car to get back and forth as well.

For C3 in Indiana, I spent almost $2000, but that included everything - airfare, hotel, food, drinks (and trust me, there were lots of those), merchandise (lots of that, too), and the other odds and ends. It sounds to me like I'll need almost that much just for airfare, hotel, rental car, and food/drinks, which won't leave any cash left over for merchandise. So it looks like I'm gonna have to bring closer to $3000 with me this time. And that just might not be doable.

See, being from New Jersey, flying to the center of the U.S. makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than flying all the way across to the west coast. I'm sure that all of you out there in L.A. and the surrounding area would feel the same way if they announced this con would be held in, say... Jacob Javits Convention Center in NYC? Now that would be an ideal place to have Celebration 5... let me call George right now and start talking to him about it :)

It ,ight cost more than $3000 if you are coming that far. California is an expensive place to visit. Just paying for gas will at least cost $50 ( more depending how big your care is). But I think it would be worth it being surronded by other star wars fans.

I live in Australia, and was toying with the idea of coming out to the US to see Celebration 4. Are these things worth travelling halfway around the world for? From the sound of this blog, it seems not. :(

If I go to CIV, I might be staying with relatives. I live an a hour away from Indianapolis, so I wish CIV were going to be there!

Problem is, I didn't get the word until after C3 and I live in indiana, about 2 driving hours away, and I just moved from California area! Needless to say, I'm not going with my poor budget.

Don't get me wrong, I had a good time for the most part. But let's say they were having this convention in Austrailia... would I go all the way there for it? Nope. Unless of course each person was going to be able to have a 1-on-1 lunch with George Lucas for the price of admission. That might get me to fly halfway around the world. Maybe. Maybe not.

I just think you have to know what you're in for and plan accordingly. If I was traveling somewhere that I knew there were going to be thousands of people in a small area, there are going to be lines.

If I had any hope of going to CIV (which I don't), I'd make sure I brought some good, sturdy shoes, maybe a folding chair, and plan for lots of bottled water.

I can see this being a problem if you weren't ready for it, but if you know what to expect, the I'd think it wouldbe fun...

Not exactly. If you don't want to rent a car, from what I hear, certain hotels will have shuttles to and from the convention at opening and closing time, and in-between.

As far as the lines are concerned, when CIV was announced, it was said that they would be addressing the problem of lines, particularly in the convention store, by having them open all day and having multiple self-checkout lines in addition to regular checkouts. I would imagine this would help somewhat, but you can still expect to see long lines.

You know, don't let him talking about the lines get you to stop going. It was the best weekend of my life. However, being in NJ is quite an obstacle (I'm in Eastern PA). I know Indy was booked for April and May, but why not have it in June? Indy is a great city, and not just because of the nice people who live there, but the location. We didn't fly there, and we're only about 2 hours driving distance from New Jersey. We drove to Indy.

But the weather in Indy....argh.

Well, I'm going, lines or not lines. I want to meet some of my buddies that I have made in here. Plus get lost in all of the Star Wars hoopla. I don't care about the lines...I will deal with it...Like Wampa said....I will make sure I have water, good shoes and a folding chair. But I also plan on doing other things in Los Angeles too....I'm a native to California and live near San Francisco...So I would be stupid to not go...It's in my home State.

You also have to keep in mind that lines are going to happen at any convention this size. It's like going to a water park and complaining the lines are all too long. Of course the lines are gonna be long! It's a water park! It's just part of the experience- if you hate lines, then don't go to a water park. Or a theme park. Or a convention...

yes the lines, weather & the store were negatives @ C3 but everything else was a blast! This was my first Celebration and I loved being there. It will be impossible to feel the electricity of the premiere of the last Star Wars movie, by definition, but this is LA. I have hopes that we will be Star Wars rewarded for traveling this far. A big plus for me is that Steve has indicated they want to have this week in LA be Star Wars Central. George will be in town earlier for something Star War related so I'm also hoping he will put us on his dance card.

aaaannnnd....LA is convenient for those we would love to hear from. and that includes those wizards behind the scenes as well as the traditionally defined celebrities.
