3-D or not to 3-D
The rumblings of the Star Wars movie in 3-D have hit again. Sure, Rick McCallum is talking it up, but hasn't he done that for YEARS now? I have not seen the technology in action, but from what I have read it is amazing. DEPTH is the big thing here. It shows depth rather than simply having things POP out at you. Sounds damn good to me! Especially since the clarity is supposedly amazing. So the question is, will we see Star Wars (either ANH or even all six) in 3-D anytime soon?

If you have read any of my blog, you might notice I am always cautious about everything Star Wars. The new show(s) in particular. I seriously that the 3-D thing will not happen. I don't think the general public cares about it. 20-30 year old movies in the theater... AGAIN? Even if they are in 3-D, no one cares. Sure, I do- you do- all of us Star Wars fans do but the average person really doesn't.

Yes, they did talk about this over at the Force-Cast last week with Rick McCallum hyping it up. Being a huge fan of Star Wars i'm definitely going to be there opening day or for the first midnight screening!

You do however bring up a good point, how profitable will it be for them to re-release all 6 films? How many people will actually pay and see these 3-D films, supposedly this could be the "last frontier" for movie theaters since 3-D tech isn't readily available at home so it will be interesting to see what else they can come up with to get people such as the "average joe" excited about seeing the films in 3-D format.

The 3D effects look amazing on stuff that was made for it. I saw NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS in 3D and was completely and utterly unimpressed. The previews for upcoming 3D stuff looked amazing but when you take a 2D image and force it into 3D, it just didn't hold up.
The one thing that Star Wars has going for it is the existence of all of it's separate layers. I would assume that they kept those int he computer after the SEs came out. That might help a bit.
Cool as it sounds, I'm not holding my breath for these re-re-re-releases.

Slow:

One of the things that bothers me about the possible 3-D release is exactly what you mention about how good things do or do not look in 3-D if they were not MADE for the new 3-D process. You know what that means right? More "new, improved" effects in the original trilogy. This time around for the benefit of the 3-D experience.

I hope not though!

Hmmm.... While 3D Star Wars sounds amazing, the last 3D movie I saw gave me a headache and the image didn't look very good or clear - maybe because I already wear glasses? Or maybe it was like what you and Slow were discussing about the 2D to 3D thing. Well, in any case, I'd go see ROTS at the very least. Or ANH if that's all they do.

I must agree with all of you. I believe the Prequels would look fantastic in 3D, but the OT would not hold up as well because of the many changes that have been made to the film.
