Fiction in Fiction
Sometimes it seems like fictional characters live in bubbles. They never think their situation is oddly similar to last week's episode of their favorite TV show, or relax by laughing at B movies, or make jokes about pop culture (come on, don't they have Corellian Idol?), or try to emulate their favorite characters.

One of my favorite EU moments is toddlers Jacen and Jaina reciting The Little Lost Bantha Cub for comort when they're lost in Coruscant's lower levels. It's just so darn cute, and it's something that makes them seem more real to me. (Let's not forget Luke playing with his toy ship in ANH, either.) I also loved what's-her-name's line in one of the Han Solo Adventures where she says Han looks like a holo star. Real people say things like that, because real people watch movies/holos and compare what they see to their lives. I imagine that between ANH and ESB Leia accused Han of trying to be the Star Wars equivalent of Indiana Jones or some such. I also think The Courtship of Princess Leia would be greatly improved if some character said, "Guys, a blond, shirtless prince just dropped out of the sky and proposed to Leia. Am I the only one who thinks his middle name is Gary Stu and he just escaped from fanfiction.net or the cover of a romance novel?"

Why am I thinking about this? Because I just got the Firefly boxed set for Christmas, and I started imagining that in the Star Wars universe, they watch Firefly, which is based on some very old human legends, and the opening narration starts with, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... After Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized," and this idea makes me giggle. I can just imagine a little Han saying, "I want to be cool like Captain Mal when I grow up! Only my ship will have guns!"
