 | Series Overview: The Corellian Trilogy |
The Corellian Trilogy was written by Roger Macbride Allen, and published through 1995. It is set 18 years ABY and introduced us to Thracken Sal Solo (although AC Crispin later gave us a backstory) and Centrepoint Station.
This thread is being discussed in the BC&T forum here and more information about the books, including their blurbs, can be found here.
I posted my thoughts about the first book, Ambush at Corellia, here:
Just finished Ambush at Corellia. It was a bit slow to start, and it really is rather dated (many subsequent books fill in the years between JAT and this trilogy but there is almost an assumption that nothing has happened in between, eg, the NR forces are at an all time low because they've had so little to do etc).
However, these are minor quibbles. Once it got going it really moved well (although I thought the part with Kalenda's entry to Corellia really dragged for me - contrary to Thrawniscool's view of that part) and the ending was very well done (it was good to see a hero who has become bedraggled from her experience too).
Can't wait to get into Assalut at Selonia.
And then regarding the middle book here:
I just finished Assault at Selonia and again quite enjoyed this middle installment of the trilogy.
In this case I did like the description of Belindi Kalenda's difficult return - this time to Coruscant.
However, the level of animosity between Mara Jade and Han and Leia was a bit odd given that it seems to have been overcome in the subsequent books that fill the earlier period in the chronology. Apart from this, her characterisation seemed a tad superficial, as did Luke and Leia's.
I suppose the focus of this trilogy is more on Han, though, and his parts were really enjoyable - especially the way he interracted with the Selonian during their escape.
It was also good to see the kids being given an improtant role - which I assume is about to be taken a step higher in the finale. Maybe I will read the JJK/YJK after all.
And finally here:
I've now finished Showdown at Centrepoint and really enjoyed it. Unlike some of the tension building scenes in the earlier books which had a tendency to drag, the climax of this book was extremely well written. I particularly like the countdown looking at each major characters point of view as the clock counted down.
I also really enjoyed the trip to Selonia and the interraction between Han and the Selonians.
There were aspects that were unsatisfying eg, the limited recognition by Luke, Leia or Han of just how special the children's actions (especially those of Anakin) really were.
However, overall this trilogy was a worthwhile read and quite enjoyable.
Then immediately after that post in response to a specific comment (shown in bold) I posted:
The Corellia books were crap!
1. Landos marriage - pointless, stupid and uninteresting
2. Luke helps Lando on Mon Mothmas account - more stupid - completly pointless and out of character
3. Corellia is linked with Hans past and in the first Leia wishes to kno more about it but the author has nothing to reveal! - most stupid.
4. The children - it's difficult to include children in a scifi story. But why dies Leia hire someone to take care of their children when she has time herself? Is she such a bad mother?
1. Unlike the Lando side story in BFC, I thought that this one was quite well done and made a nice light subplot.
2. I didn't think that Luke going along with Lando was completely pointless, but I do not think that the point was sufficiently well developed. Mon Mothma's point of view was interesting, but it didn't seem to be taken anywhere.
3. I think the author told us a fair bit about Corellian society that we didn't previously know, and they were tourists before the action broke out.
4. I think the children's involvement was well done, and I didn't have any difficulty at all with someone being hired - he was not a nanny but a tutor.
