Controversy and Collecting.. Stuff!
Wotcha,

I bought one of these Interactive R2-D2s about 2 'n' half to 3 years ago and it's still going strong! It's just so 'Gorram Shiny!'

I've had trouble coming up with anything to Blog about, My well of creativity is as dry as a nun's.. Habit!

The idea of this Blog was brought on by a conversation I had with a couple of mates on a non Star Wars related subject.. Gary Glitter and Michael Jackson. Now I know that you all know who Jackson is! but Glitter, If you don't know (apart from being rhyming slang for a toilet) is a former singer that was fairly big in England in the 70's and 80's, but fell off of his pedestal in a quite spectacular fashion for being accused of being a big fat dirty nonce when he was caught with, let's say 'Inappropriate' pictures of children in the all-together on his computer.. if you get my meaning. And has just 'gone down' for allegedly forcing his unpleasantries on two adolescent Taiwanese girls. Incidently he was put away for just the 2 years.. I reckon they should have taken a rusty razor blade to his knackers.. but that's not for now!

The point of the discussion mainly being that both of my friends said that because Glitter is a dirty old man they won't listen to his music anymore, And if Michael Jackson was convicted for the alleged thing that he was accused of but later acquitted for, my friend's would have boycotted his music too!

I opposed this line of thinking with the argument 'but they made bloody good music and whatever they get up to in their personnal life wasn't going to change that! No matter how sick, depraved and demented it may be!' I could understand them saying that they would not buy any subsequent records the pair may have released, because funding a 'known' paedo isn't what should be going on at all, but if you already have an album and you like it why toss it away? It's like cutting off your nose to spite your face! It doesn't effectively achieve anything apart from clearing a hole or two in your CD rack!

(For the record, I reckon Jacko's Innocent!).. *Ahem!?!* ;

Having just read that bit back to myself, the next bit doesn't seem at all relevant, but I'm gonna go with it.

As a Collector, I only try to get my grubby little mitts on the things that I really want. I am a long way away from being a completist! (except for the Unleashed line, they are just too cool!)
I have three principles when it comes to collecting.

* I have a tendancy for buying anything to do with Artoo, Boba Fett, Ep III Clones, Stormtroopers, Threepio and Vader.

*Most of the other characters, I can either take or leave depending on whether or not the item interests me. Obi-Wan, Luke, Chewie, Han.. etc.

*Then there's the characters I don't really care for too much, Which I won't buy out of some seemingly subconcious principle. I don't own a single thing dedicated to Jar Jar, Ep I Anakin, or any of the minor characters like the Ep II Bar scene crowd.

Now when I look at DJ Maul's Toyroom tour I can't help but be impressed. It's fantastic to see such a broad Spectrum of Star wars Merchandise, And Kudos to him! B-)

I wouldn't dream of picking up some of the toys and things that get churned out because of my personal problems, either with the character or the style of the toy. I am not a fan of the Burger King toys because I just don't like the style of them, but they're good for kids (Young and Old alike) ;) and the other side I don't like the Mr Potato head range because to me it's just cheap, opportunistic commercialism, but hey, each to their own! Wouldn't it be boring if every body liked the same thing.

Reading it all back.. There seems to be no connection between the top and bottom points.. funny how the mind works, isn't it?..No? Just me then!?!

Well, if you got this far, Thanks for reading!

Keep Smiling :D

Blasphemy!

Ha Ha! Sorry K-Fan :D but to be fair, one of my favourite 3 3/4 inch figures is the Old Ben with the Light up Saber (with the button on his back) It pairs off nicely with the Vader one. And I have got a 12 inch one as well.

Anyway He could have been in my 'I don't really care for too much' section! :^O

I'm kidding JMP...I'm just like you although I might be even more selective. I have to really, really, really want something before I'll get it and that doesn't happen too often. I have a few items but not much. I guess if I had more money to commit to such pursuits I would, but I find Star Wars much more easily on the blogs and in people's words than I do in the things that hang on my wall or sit on my shelf. Except for Luke's T-16 model, I don't recall any of the SW characters playing with toys...not even little Ani.

Pickles, you make me laugh. *giggle*

I love my robot R2D2. He is Gorram Shiny, huh! :) So much fun!

I'm relatively selective in my collecting myself, although different characters than you. Obviously Han is my real biggee (duh!) and the Falcon, R2 and I love collecting the 12" figures. I go for things that strike my fancy.

I enjoyed reading this blog; you made me smile a lot! :)

Good point! the next closest thing is Artoo playing Chewie at Dejarik, No real toys though!?:|

hey, 1st up, thanks for the plug! Im glad your digging the tour.

As you said, we all like different things; thats why there is always such a HUGE variety of SW stuff to choose from...believe me, for all the stuff I do have, there is TONS of stuff I passed on that simply didnt interest me at all.

pt 2:

For instance, I am a sucker for Vader stuff, so I did but the Vader Transformer...but the rest of them do nothing for me.

I thought those little M&M figs were cute, but way to expensive for what they were and again, passed.

I do agree on the Unleashed, they rock and are some of the best figs out for their price range.

and Ive never ever had an interest in say, buying a one version of a C-3PO that came with the battle droid head ON the fig and the regular head on the side AND the same fig that came with the regular head on and the battle droid head on the side...to me, its still the SAME EXACT fig.

Others call that a "variant" and MUST buy both...and if thats their thing, great for them. Go for it.

one last comment, on the music issue:

If I had to throw out every CD I own of an artist that at some point past or present did something "offensive" or broke the law I wouldnt have too many CD's left now would I?

That being said, pedophilia is a horrible crime and can cause a very strong emotional reaction, and if people decide that listening to Gary Glitter or MJ's music is now impossible because of their association with these dispicable acts that is certainly their right as well.

hey, 1st up, thanks for the plug! Im glad your digging the tour.

No probs, It's a great job you're doing! B-)

so I did buy the Vader Transformer

For me too much effort went into the ship part and not enough went into the character.

I do agree on the Unleashed, they rock

They are absolute Class!

one last comment, on the music issue:

Absolutely! But even if MJ went down.. I still don't think I could stop listening to Blame It On The Boogie! :p

I had the exact same reaction to all the rest of them...but like I said, Im a sucker for Vader...

You didnt manage to score the Unleashed Shock Trooper yet have you? If so, is he as cool as he looks? I still cant seem to track him down... X-(

I may get part 16 of the tour up tomorrow IF I have the time...just FYI.

Yeah, I got him last week with Han and Chewie, A friend of mine works in a shop and hides one of each away as soon as the new line comes into store.. A Top Man!
And yeah he's awesome, A bit close to the Clone trooper for my liking but I've seperated them so it's all good!

Ya know, Jackson was always (as an adult, anyway) a bit...off....but just because I might not wanna party with him (or..ya know..be in the same room) doesn't mean his music isn't good. "Man in the Mirror" is still one of the best songs ever.

As for Gary Glitter, the only song of his I actually know is "Rock & Roll Part 2" (for those who don't know the name, think of any sporting event you've been too...."dah dah DAAAAH Daaah...HEY....dah dah dah...") so I can't really speak toward that, but as far as his conviction and his music, the only thing I can think one has to do with the other is probably no new albums for a few years...

I want an robot R2 to chase my Darth Furball away....What a hoot!

I wish I had a spare room just to make as a Star Wars theme room...Than I would be collecting more. Alas, I don't have the room to store or display all of this stuff and it just does not go with my chabby chic decor. :( So it is stored in my closet.

Collecting for me? It's all about Luke, Anakin, Obi-Wan and Vader....And of course R2D2.

Hey Pickles, I'm back and trying to make my rounds to visit my favs and you most definitely are one of them. The beginning of this blog scared me. :8}

As for my favorite collectable items, I'd have to say it's thus far been Darth Vader... my favorite thing so far is that 3D Darth head puzzle I told y'all about a while back. I just received a dirty storm trooper from Tatooine on ANH... the one that Old Ben uses the force on, saying "These aren't the droids we're looking for".

What I love is that everyone I know is just giddy to get me SW stuff! It's like they're living out their closet fandom through me or something! LOL!

Anyway, hope all is well... been sleeping okay? :x
