Empire Dreams #2
The second thing I noticed while watching The Empire Strikes Back was Vader's speech to Luke during the Cloud City struggle. Nineteen years later, and he still has dreams of ruling the galaxy. Consider... in Episode III, Anakin was on Mustafar when he begged Padme' to join him ruling the galaxy as husband and wife. In Episode V, he asks Luke to join him in ruling the galaxy as father and son. Talk about deluded. ]:) Perhaps it was a misguided sense of family (his mom was born to slavers, was impregnated by little proto-cellular midi-chlorians, and died at the hands of dirty aliens... his wife was a politician - need I say more?!), but Anakin had delusions of grandeur way before Episode VI. It makes the whole thing fit together, but it also kind of makes Anakin more pathetic. We see him redeemed in Episode VI, but did he really need redemption? He was a whiny, snivelling brat who wasn't satisfied unless he got his way. When he didn't get his way, he became reckless and impulsive, and often went against his training and the wishes of his mentors to make things right. Yes, the six Star Wars films are ultimately about Anakin, but his attitude most of the time makes me think that Luke as the better focal point. The prequels then become merely a backdrop to Luke's story, showing the poor family situation he was born into. The original trilogy then shows the rough situation he lived through, and how he single-handedly made everything right. Yes, Anakin was the Chosen One... the prophecy appears to have been that he was to give birth to Luke and Leia and then destroy the Emperor, thereby eliminating all the old Jedi dogma and allowing a New Jedi Order to emerge.
