 | Not That Bad... |
All the hype over Episode III's "dark and disturbing imagery" got me watching the film yesterday with a father's eye for what my kids would be able to handle. I have a 10- and and 14-year old, both daughters, and both of them sat through Return of the King - also PG-13 - without flinching. In my estimation, the hype about Episode III's PG-13 rating was just that - hype. There wasn't anything in the film that was any more disturbing that what was in RotK. In fact, RotK was so chock-full of orcs, Uruk-hai, and other disgusting looking creatures that it makes Anakin's charred form seem almost mundane. Yes, the slaughter of the younglings in the Jedi Temple is disturbing, but all you see is Anakin ignite his lightsaber and the little dude flinches. Immediate cut-away to the next scene, then later a bunch of CG bodies on the floor. The death toll in RotK was much, much higher, and much gorier. In fact, look back at the original Star Wars trilogy... Episode IV had two charred bodies in it: those of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, whose deaths were every bit as senseless as those of the younglings. Episode V has tauntaun guts spilling out everywhere. Episode VI has the heart-wrenching deaths of several cute Ewoks. (Hey, I hate the Ewoks as much as anybody...!)I would have to say that Episode III didn't ramp up the violence all that much, when you compare it to history. Even the beheading of Count Dooku was less visual that than of Jango Fett. C'mon, give this film a break and enjoy it for what it is: the last Star Wars movie ever, and the completion of the greatest space fantasy of all time.
