Why not writers?--A fan-activities rant
Okay, I would like to vent a little on the matter of fan activities. I love things like fan art, fan films, fan fic, fan everything! I've done fanfic and fan art and would love to someday get involved in a fanfilm.

There is, however, a slight bias. My friends and I love fanfilms and especially ones such as the Pink 5 series and Ewok in an Elevator, though my second favorite after Pink 5 has to be the Death Star Help Desk one. (I relate to anything help-desky.) I look forward to seeing the list on atomfilms.com of who won George Lucas Selects, Audience Choice, etc.

Now, here's my question: Why is there nothing equivalent in fanfic? It's true that many sites, theforce.net included, have semi-annual or annual awards done by popular vote. This does, however, fall a bit short of being the same thing.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a juried competition for the people who don't have the money or means or perhaps enough interested people to make a fanfilm. I know many people who have worked just as hard to craft an excellent story as many of the fanfilm people that I have known.

This is not to say that I will ever stop liking fanfilms. I think I'll be bucking for a New Pink Order, Pink Menace, Attack of the Pinks and Revenge of the Pink until I'm too senile to remember what color pink is. I do, however, wish that there were equal rights for those of us who stare at blank Word documents until inspiration or exhuastion hits.
