What's the harm?--A thought on Jedi Attachments
If anyone is curious, that's Attachments, not attachments and it's a bit of a joke with one of my cowriters. We started a series of stories about Qui-Gon's platonic but lengthy relationship with a Senator and the first time Obi-Wan heard about it, he called her an Attachment in the same way you'd call someone the scum of the earth. Qui-Gon, of course, said apologetically (for not getting it), "You take that back?" and ever since, we have made a very big distinction between attachment and Attachment.

So, here I'm going to talk about my frustration with the Jedi idea that Attachment is forbidden (Yes, that was definitely a capitalized attachment, my friends in AOTC).

Now, I believe that the Force is not to be taken lightly, that the Jedi Code is there for a reason, but I also think the Jedi stinted themselves. I am a Mormon and as such, live the Law of Chastity that means that I have to keep my thoughts pure as well as dressing modestly and not having pre-marital Attachments. In that way, sometimes, I have felt like I am a Jedi with the "Attachment is forbidden, possession is forbidden, but compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is central to a Jedi's life."

Let me tell you that the Jedi would have the urges to think about what they're missing, whether it was forbidden or not. Equally, they might act on it. Instead, they are left fearing the wrath of the Council for daring to have any friendship that might turn into something more. I think this is unhealthy mentally and unnatural.

I think if Anakin had been able to look on romance with a balanced, healthy assessment of its advantages, he would not have been impulsive, desperate and deceitful. He would have been able to enlist the help of Obi-Wan without fearing and resenting Obi-Wan's power to have him expelled from the Jedi Order. Then again, if that had happened, maybe we wouldn't have had a great OT, but it's something to think about.
