What was Leia told about her heritage?
I am currently writing a very thought-provoking (at least for me) fic called To Cast Away Stones and someone recently asked how it's possible that Leia's adoption was not public knowledge. At several points in that story, there have been delicious moments of dramatic irony. Luke will claim Leia is his sister as part of a cover story or Leia will make some comment about her own parentage.

I've seen a wonderful conversation written by Bellebayard, JediSkySong and FernWithy/JediGaladriel in their fic "The Penitent". In it, Leia is talking to Anakin post-ROTJ and they are discussing their relationship. She says "Lord Vader, did I ever tell you I was adopted?" and from there, it takes all of four sentences between them to arrive at her heritage. I was very fascinated by that moment and the statement at the end: "May the Maker forgive me."

It begs the question of how close to knowing the truth Leia was at any given moment.

First consideration, I think, is whether or not she ran across her mother's name or holo. Obviously, since Padme was a prominent member of the Senate, at least by virtue of longevity. Leia probably heard stories about the fall of the Republic and especially how Palpatine came to power. This could have happened in school or at home as part of her upbringing as an Organa.

Did she ever look at a picture of that senator and recognize any of herself? If, as she tells luke in Return of the Jedi, she remembers "images, feelings" of her mother, would those images that she somehow gets give her a connection to the person she's seen in the holos?

Also, how paranoid would the Organas have been? Certainly, they'd have been careful to keep her from knowing about her father's fate.

Second of all, the EU suggests heavily that Leia is Force-sensive and even ROTJ Luke tells her that she has the same power to be a Jedi that he does. Was this suppressed? How was it suppressed? I believe very strongly that Leia's "resistance to the mindprobe" was an evidence of her connection to the Force, since it was basically fighting fire with fire.

I believe that she was told about her own adoption, but not the details, mostly because she did have those memories of Padme.

Well, I KNOW that she wasn't told that DV / Anakin was her father, or things would be VERY much different in the OT. If she found out that Padme was her mother, she could have found out about her marrige to Anakin (maybe).

Personally, I don't think that it was suppressed-she was unconsciously using it to defend herself. As long as Bail didn't send her to Yoda or Obi-Wan & have them train her, then why should you suppress it? (I personally don't see how it's even possible.) Without training, the Emperor & Vader won't be as likely to sense her strength in the Force & anything suspicious would be filed away as a "odd event."

cont..
If she found out that Padme was her mother, she could have found out about her marrige to Anakin (maybe). Even if she found out about Padme (quite likely) & Anakin, (not so likely) not many people knew that Anakin was Darth Vader except some high ranking Imperials. (Ex: The Emperor, Vader himself, Dark Side people, etc.) And I don't believe that Bail Organa would've encouraged her to go up to the Emperor or Vader & ask something like that. That's the only way she could've put 2 & 2 together.

My impressions from the saga on film all stem from ROTJ, specifically the conversation where Luke tells Leia of their true heritage.

It seems to me that Leia's Force sensitivities gave her the "images and feelings" as Yoda once said that the Force will show you the future.. the past. Because Leia, as confessed to Luke, had this power that "she does not understand and could never have", she therefore went her whole life thus far beleiving these Force visions were her true memories.

Then Luke tells her the truth. Her reply: "Somehow I've always known" (Luke was her brother, who her real parents were, that she had the Force and her memories were visions)

I have no problem beleiving Leia was never told of her parent's true identity, even if she knew she was adopted.

The Penitent is on JG's site, http://vadersmask.homestead.com/penitent.html. Be warned that it's long but be assured that it is breathtakingly worth it!

I agree. My impression has been that while she knew she was adopted, she did not know who either of her parents were. I think that telling her that her mother was a famous political leader from Naboo would have opened the door to too many questions. I don't think Bail Organa would have wanted to take that chance.
