Motivated Monster--Exactly why I love Palpatine
Okay, bear with me, but I finally figured this out for myself. I have been intrigued by Palpatine since The Empire Strikes Back and have chalked it up to things like him being a great actor or the cleverness required to fool an entire Galaxy into making you king for a day (or 40 years).

This morning, though, I had the Smurfs theme song stuck in my head and was thinking on TV antagonists. In every show, there seems to be someone who is out to get the good guys. Spike, The Claw, etc.

But they never follow through. There is never really one epiphanal episode where Inspector Gadget is utterly thwarted and The Claw rules over all the earth. Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer starts out promising, but then gets besotted with the Slayer and just wants world peace (or the chip out of his head). The only person who seems to actually have broken this trend is Lex Luthor and it took 2 decades and Superman Returns for that to happen.

With such unsuccessful villains, is it any wonder that I admire Palpatine? I don't necessarily like the fact that he is a sociopath who committed genocide and ruled the Galaxy with an iron fist, but at least the man got the bloody job DONE! He did what he aspired to accomplish and I think that's remarkable.

It's like Ollivander says in Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone: "After all, the Dark Lord did great things... Terrible, but great!"

amen... we finally got to see the bad guys win and (for me) I think that's why the saga is cool.

Indeed. Palpatine is probably the least conflicted character in the saga - he doesn't whine (unless it's for show) like Luke, Mace, Anakin, and others. He knows what he wants and he remains steadfast in his pursuit of it: rulership over the galaxy and ultimate master of the Force. Palpatine is cool for many reasons but I think it's his purity of purpose that's most impressive. Of course, shooting lightning out of your hands is cool too.

he really did have a flexible plan. when his plans failed, or his apprentice got killed, he always worked around that.

The thing I admire most about Palpatine is no one ever saw his plans coming until the very end. To hide your plans and your true identity from the most intellectual and forseeing minds in the galaxy is truly amazing( and I was talking about the Jedi not the senators). Not only did he fool the Jedi, some jedi actually liked Palpatine. Imagine to have your archnemisis trust you only to pull that trust out from under them is brilliant.

Elegant words...For a more civilized age.

I love the way Palps embodies the ultimate evil genius. And he wins, for 23 years he gets to rule the galaxy! "If it weren't for those meddeling kids!"

Ya this blog is right. Hes the man to get things done. But what i thought was REALLY cool is when Sids engaged in saber duels. At first i thought Palpatine was just an evil emperor who used lightning to torture his enemies. But when i found out he was the cause for the star wars trilogy, i was shocked. I was even more shocked when i found out he was a sith lord! And when he busted out a saber and took down three jedi in under 5 seconds, i thought "Palps is the man." And when i saw Palps pretty much best Yoda (Yoda, the greatest jedi ever to live) in saber and force combat, i thought "This guys frickin unbeatable".
