So, my initial reaction after the sensory overload of ROTS was "WOW" in the good "wow! That's awesome!" way and the "wow.... *shakes head in disbelief* just wow..."
After digesting the movie a bit, and getting a few (count them... three... zzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) hours of sleep, I find that though I enjoyed the film, there were some serious problems with it...
1) The whole movie seemed rushed, like there was more story to tell (I hear that many many scenes got cut) and Lucas simply did not want to make the movie any longer than it already was. There was nothing wrong with three hours of Lord of the Rings, there would have been nothing wrong with three hours of Star Wars.
2) Slapstick comedy is not the Star Wars way. Yes, R2 has traditionally been a great source of comic relief, but the bit with the Super Battle Droids (SBDs) was not necessary. Much like 3PO's "This is such a drag" line from AOTC, having two hulking machines of death sliding all over themselves in some oil completely takes the viewer out of the moment, and destroys the tension that's building over Anakin and Obi-Wan trying to figure out how to rescue Palpatine.
3) There are waaaaaaaaaaaaay better voices that could have been used for the SBDs. How unrealistic is it to have these upgraded versions of the Battle Droid to have the same kind of pushover sounding voice? Bigger, badder droids call for more badass sounding voices... that is unless of course a new battle tactic is to cause targets to die from fits of laughter.
4) Padme was pretty useless in this movie. She could have only been onscreen for three scenes and the movie wouldn't have been much different. She was only necessary for the "I'm pregnant" the "This is how Liberty dies" and the birth of the twins scenes. All the rest of the time she was on screen, she was basically acting the same exact scene over and over. Sure, she inadvertently took Obi-Wan to Mustafar, but he could have found a different way to get there...
5) There was all kinds of hype over the wookiee battle scene, and how yay! The wookiees are back! That was the shortest battle scene I've ever seen in any Star Wars film.... And there wasn't much plot progression in it either.
6) Anakin killing the Younglings. That scene made me sick to my stomach.... Completely unnecessary. Yes, I understand that he's the second most evil guy in the galaxy, but still, murdering those children. The children who were looking to him for protection... that's just sick. It would have been a lot better if Obi-Wan and Yoda simply found the bodies later...
7) This complaint is pure fan girl ... But why did Aayla have to have such a bad death?! Even Ki-Adi Mundi got to defend himself! Why did she have to get shot in the back?!
All that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience watching this movie... I was in "the zone" laughing, crying, forgetting to breathe, forgetting that I wasn't actually in everyone's favorite galaxy far, far away.
