Dear Mr. Lucas, my first born child is now yours...please stop w/the DVD's
From reading online about a 30th Anniversary Edition of the Original Trilogy coming out on DVD I think I'm almost at my wit's end for buying Star Wars DVD's.

The marketing machine at Lucasfilm is obviously top notch knowing their fan base & the amount of money they can make via the DVD. However, shelling out around $45 for the OT when it first came out on DVD was an investment I was more than willing to make. Fast forward two years and presto, the Original Trilogy is now available not packaged all-in-one so those half dozen people around the world who only want to purchase RotJ can own just that movie & save themselves $30....oh yeah, but as an added bonus the original theatrical versions of the films will be included for anyone interested. Well of course die-hard fans are going to want that - $40+ more spent on the movies again.

Oh now the 30th Anniversary is coming up in 2007...let's put out another box set of the movies with a special somethingorother on it, and of course the die-hards will buy that too (yes me included). I'm trying to think what exactly will be put in this collection to make people buy it.

Perhaps we'll get all 6 movies in one big collector's case. Maybe the OT will have the Special Editions/Only Edition and the original theatrical releases as well. What if there's an Easter Egg on one of the discs with the Holiday Special. Some bonus feature will have to be added to these movies for people to go out & buy them again...or will the fans just buy any new set because it is Star Wars & it says 30th Anniversary Special Edition?

Of course, perhaps Lucas has decided to swing towards either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and that's the only way the film(s) will be released. If that is the case then everyone will have to go out & buy the correct DVD player...which may or may not be the overall winner in the new DVD format war. I'm certain there will be more than a few unhappy consumers if they have their brand spanking new Blu-Ray DVD player purchased for $800 to play their Star Wars DVD collection on, only to have HD-DVD win the race and Blu-Ray becomes the new Betamax. (note: I own neither of the two types of new DVD players so I have no bias towards either one)

In any event, I think it is fairly safe to say it would be cheaper for me in the long run to just give up my first-born child to Lucas than to continualy buy the same movies over & over again...but that said I will be one of those people out there eagerly awaiting whatever version of the film gets released...again...and again...and probably again one more time.

If you're wanting to sell your children then you're at the wrong site. You want eBay.

If they put the holiday special on a dvd, that is motivation enough for me to stay as far away from said set. I'm still wrestling with whether or not to get the OOT.

No need to single out Lucas for this. Everybody does it.

Example: Lord of the Rings. First there was the 2 disc sets that contained each theatrical version of the film and a bonus disc. Those were sold seperately. Eventually they were put in a box set. Then there are the four disc Extended Cuts of each film. The film on two discs, and two more discs for extras. These sets are sold seperatley. But eventually they were put into a box set too! All three Extended DVD Editions together equals 12 discs. That box is expensive.

Now, as of this year, there are new two disc sets of the films. The first disc contains both the theatrical and extended editions on the first disc, and a new documentary on the second. Each set is sold seperately, but the total will be six discs. The audio/video quality on the movie discs are not as good as previous editions because of the need to use more compression in order to fit both movies onto one disc.

And heres the kicker: They are available for a limited time only!!

SoaB...LOTR was a good example, but at least in those there was a good amount of material added whereas for the latest SW releases there were subtractions ?:|

I know a ton of movies re-release with various versions (think Scarface is on it's 3rd or 4th Edition after this past week's release) but at least with most movies they are single shot films, and not trilogies which = triple the cost :P

LOTR is a bad example.

A) We were told beforehand that both a theatrical and Extended mega release were coming, so we could choose ahead of time which to buy.

B) The Extended Boxset just repackaged the 3 EXs, no new material was given, so it wasn't a double dip, just a set for people who didn't buy the EXs individually

C) The Limited Edition is a joke to true LOTR fans because it's unecessary compared to the EX, as it lacks most of the good stuff from those sets and sports only a new documentray of no real value compared to the exhaustive docs on the EX sets. This release was for people who never got them, or would like to have both versions of the film in one set.
