 | A Long, Long Time Ago...In The Future? |
The other day I got my The Art of Star Wars 2008 calendar in the mail and much to my surprise it came with a bonus DVD that contained teaser & release trailers for all 6 Star Wars movies plus the Lego Revenge of the Brick short film.
I finally got around to putting the DVD in this morning and was watching the Teaser & Release trailer for Episode IV and at the end of the release trailer a statement made by the announcer (can't think of the right word for the guy right now) caught my attention:
"No legendary adventure of the past could be as exciting as this romance of the future."
Now I'm fairly certain after watching Star Wars a few times in my day ( ) that the saga took place a long, long time ago...which is kind of the opposite of the future. Seeing as how George Lucas seemed to make sure everything was just right for his film I found it funny this comment was put in the trailer.
This isn't a huge deal or anything Earth shattering, but having never actually seen (or at least not recalling) the trailers for the Original Trilogy that one comment really caught my attention...and gave me something else to put in my blog here

George Lucas had less control for Episode IV than for every other movie. If I remember correctly, he had to fight to maintain the notion of past at the beginning of his movie.
There was even a promotion item that started with " In the year 3 000..., you can see it on the Vault. Steven Sansweet indicates in the book that all of this marketing was done internally by the Fox, not by George.

In the original teaser, the voice over artist says, "Somewhere, this could all be happening". So technically, "A long long time ago" could mean the very present!

The marketing people at 20thCenFox had no idea how to market this strange movie Lucas was creating. They didn't really even understand it or what he was trying to do with it. I personally think that Lucas' idea to make it not something that will happen but something that already was somewhere else in the universe was nothing short of brilliant.

I think people get confused when they try to make "Star Wars" about human history. It was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. In other words, what we see in "Star Wars" has nothing to do with Earth or humans, or even any potential residents of the Milkyway. The cultures and governments represented in "Star Wars" are more than likely long dead and if we were to find the moon of Endor, or Tatooine, or any of the other planets now they would be long dead and their artifacts mere dust.

I remember watching the original trailers on one of the bonus discs when Star Wars came out on DVD. I thought the trailers were hilarous: "Imagine, this could be happening right now..."
As others pointed out, the studio wasn't sure what to do with this. Also, I'm sure they were concerned that something that appeared futuristic was being set "a long time ago" and how that might confuse fans, when it actually is so unimportant to the overall story.

They hardly marketed Ep. IV at all... if we hadn't been late-night TV watchers, I doubt we'd have known it was coming out at all... I vaguely remember my husband saying, "Hey there's a new space movei coming out soon!"
now they would be long dead and their artifacts mere dust.
In the prologue to the ROTS novel, Matthew Stover says it was so long ago and so far away that it cannot be told in terms we'd understand....

I think eventually the Jedi are going to stumble on the 13th Colony
That's amazing! I have actually been thinking that the humans in Star Wars might be descended from the 13th Colony, which somehow got lost in time and space.

Maybe time is a huge circle....maybe the future really IS a long time ago!
I agree with you! I'm glad to see more and more people blogging and commenting. I long for the good old days......about 18 months ago, when blogging was in it's heyday. We need good blogs again, like this one.
That was a great trailer! When Star Wars was just "Star Wars".

Hmmm, that's really interesting! I agree with FAN4YRS: everyone I talk to is like, "Why do they say 'a long time ago' if this is so futuristic?" I want to roll my eyes and reply, "Hello, did you not hear that 'in a galaxy far, far away' part?! This is long ago for them, not us! Their galaxy is more advanced than ours. We're not talking about Earth time!"
In the prologue to the ROTS novel, Matthew Stover says it was so long ago and so far away that it cannot be told in terms we'd understand....
Thanks for reminding me about that!

Sorta makes one wonder what year it would be there right now (although obviously the GFFA isn't real ). What generation of Skywalkers, if any? Anakin's great great great great great..................... (etc. etc.) grandson? An interesting thought.
