Today I watched the ROTS DVD for like the 20th time and found myself to be a tad bit bored and uninterested. For some reason, those hard hitting scenes of the movie didn't have as much impact on me as I had hoped they would. Then I thought back to the other times I watched the DVD and realized that almost all of those times, ROTS' major scenes had no real impact on me.
Don't get me wrong here, I love the ROTS DVD. The DVD itself is fantastic, but for some reason I enjoyed the movie more when I watched it in theaters. The Order 66 scene was gut-wrenching when I watched it on the big screen. So was the Battle of Heros, aka the Anakin vs Obi-Wan fight. When I watched these same scenes on my TV at home, I didn't get the same feeling that I did while watching the scenes in the theater. For a while i couldn't figure out what made them so different, but today I had a revelation of sorts.
The reason that watching ROTS in the cinema was a better experiance is because of the Cinema itself. For one, the Cinema's Surround Sound Speaker systems made you feel like you where actually
in the movie. You could hear every miscellaneous sound, every blaster shot, every lightsaber strike just as if it were occuring right next to you. Also, the fact that no other sounds where coming from outside the theater itself helped add to illusion that you where right there, in the movie. When watching the DVD on a TV, you don't get that feel of everything occuring all around you. The sound come from once direction and you often miss those small sounds you heard in the theater. Also, there are many other sounds that are interupting or drowning out the sound of the movie. You could be really into the movie, and the blasted phone would ring. Things like that kill the mood and momentum of the film.
Then there's the actual picture itself. In the theater, the entire room is dark and the screen takes up a huge amount of space. This enables all of your attention to be focused on the movie itself. Also, you can every single detail almost crystal clear on the massive screen. Colors seem richer and you become more aware of the background in the movie because it is more visible. All of your attention is focused on the movie and you are completely caught up in the flow of the picture. On the home TV screen mcuh is missed. Since the screen is smaller, you often miss a lot of what you noticed in the movies or you are forced to look harder. Since TV's can't provide the crystal clear images that movie theater screens can provide, the film appears to look different. Surrounding lights often cause glare and if watched during the day, the sunlight may also cause glare. If watched at night, the results improve.
All of these factors combined with a few others I mentioned have made my personal experiance with watchingthe ROTS DVD a tad bit less enjoyable than seeing ROTS in the cinema. Again, don't misunderstand me, I love the ROTS DVD, but I personally found watching ROTS in the Cinema to be much more enjoyable than home viewing of the ROTS DVD. Thanks for listening to me ramblings and I hope you enjoyed this entry.
