I know some of you people don't like Dark Troopers as much as Jet Troopers, because their jetpacks don't make them hover like the Jet Troopers. But that does not make them inferior.
I've always been a fan of DTs since Dark Forces (the ones in that game looked much cooler). There are a few differences between the BF DTs and the DF DTs. In BF, the game manual says they are cyborgs. But in DF, they are droids (don't believe me? Then look at the databank entry on
Dark Troopers), have better weapons (I still liked the arc caster in BF2), make inhuman sounds, and blow up when defeated. The DF DTs also make an appearance in Empire at War: Forces of Corruption, in all three phases.
Okay, now I will give you a list of tips and tricks when using DTs in Battlefront:
Both games:any map - Want a big flight for the DT (other than being blown away by multiple explosions resulting in death)? First, wait for the jetpack to be fully charged (it might take longer than the standard jetpack, but it's worth the wait). Then, activate the jetpack, deactivate and then reactivate, while in mid-air, and you will get a really big jump.
Both games:any map - If one of your CPs are is being taken over, and you are far away, use the jetpack's flight speed to your advantage (and the double boost if necessary). This wouldn't really work so well with the Jet Trooper. If we put a Dark and a Jet Trooper in a jetpack race, the DT would win.
Both games:any map - The DT may have a better gun than JT, depending on your opinion. In my opinion, they are better in both games. In some people's opinions, the clones may be better than the Imps, but that isn't so for me in the first game for a few reasons (other than the first game being Galactic Civil War-based). I wasn't as good with the clone pilot's boltcaster (least favorite pilot weapon) as I was with the droid and Imperial pilots' grenade launchers. Also, it wasn't easy getting headshots on droids with the sniper rifle (at least it was easier in the sequel). I didn't usually kill Droidekas with the EMP launcher because of a few factors: (1) reloading time, (2) clip count, (3) number of EMP blasts to burn out a Droideka's shield (it takes 2, which is the amount each clip holds), and (4) time it takes for the shield to recharge. I seemed to be better with the shotgun. At least using the EMP launcher got easier in the sequel. Even the sequel DT's gun (even though it was like the boltcaster, it was easier to kill people with) has an advantage: it can chain-up on multiple infantry when fully charged. In the sequel, it can be effective on the Mos Eisley map when you get to the cantina, where you can zap a lot of rebels right as they come out.
Battlefront: Kashyyyk: Docks - If you haven't played online (or multiplayer, for that matter) and/or have mostly used snipers wisely, but DTs unwisely, then you might think snipers are the dockmasters. You might think if you are sniping from one of the piers, you don't have to worry about anything except for troops firing from below the piers, troops charging up the bridge, other snipers, and Jedi/Sith, but that's not really true. If you are sniping, keep your eye out of the scope every once in a while, because a DT can fly up onto the pier from the dock below, sneak up on you and shoot you in the back with their shotguns (if it is a human player, he/she might wait behind you for you to be alert of your presence and then shoot you) or (if the player is human) push you off the pier while looking through the scope to a pasty end. When playing the Empire, don't just charge up the stairway and bridge to one of the piers, because you might very likely be dead before you get there. Instead, use a DT to fly straight up to pier-height and then land on the pier. Then go ahead and deal with the snipers any way you want or toy with them (or human players) for a while. Now, Dark Troopers are the true dockmasters.
Battlefront II: Mustafar - Note: Attempt with Dark Troopers
Only! Do you want to get from the landing pad to the collection base quickly or just do something fun? The first time I did it, I was going to see if I could make it there in one flight, but I got a fiery end almost making it. So, it takes two flights. Step one: make sure the jetpack is fully charged. Step two: do a double boost to the rocky edge surrounding the facility (praise be to video game physics for not making me slide down into the lava!). Step three: wait for the jetpack to fully recharge, and then do a double boost to land near the collection base. Note: This stunt could only be safely performed in video games and should not be attempted in real life unless it is a professional
Both Games: Other stuff - Another thing Gahmah forgot to mention is that their jump-jets don't stop boosting until you have landed. How is this any good you may ask? Well, this makes them the best example of a paratrooper without a parachute. Why? Easy: While the jets are ignited during the fall, the Dark Trooper will not take any damage from the impact of the fall, regardless of the height it jumps from. This can be useful on some Mod maps (PC versions only), like
this one for example (not Gahmah's, because Gahmah doesn't have the PC version).
So, there you have it. A lot of great things about Dark Troopers.
If you have any comments or other ideas of how Dark Troopers can be used specially, you can post them here.
