I tried to stay on track with work, but I was derailed by the Mitchell Report. I knew this day was coming, and I know exactly what happens next. The media vultures descend on this matter, and faster than the Millennium Falcon can make the Kessel run every analyst and expert will try, judge, and sentence major league baseball and the players in the report. Then the PR machines for the MLB, individual teams, and the players union will make their empty points and promises. The real issues - cheating in professional baseball and the fall of heroes/role models, is the last thing on their minds. I am angry and sad at the same time.
Drugs are a huge problem. Steroids are a problem in many sports other than baseball. Cheaters exist in every aspect of life. I watch baseball to have fun not to see society's problems. I think that is a big reason why I can look the other way until there is a senate report or a positive drug test to tell me what I already know. None of this changes the fact that I, a baseball fan, am partly responsible. The money I spend on tickets, hats, and the time I spend watching games on television generates the revenue. So where do I go from here? Do I burn all the merchandise I have? Boycott baseball?
There is no quick fix for baseball. I can only find one fix to mend my broken heart. The fix is to remind myself the game of baseball is not the problem, the game is pure, it's the people that are the problem. The people are the problem - players, executives, and fans. The game is still pure, what makes it fun is still intact and strong. People can change, and eventually we will, it will take time, but it will happen. Let the media and the lawyers make a little money (everyone's gotta eat right?).
Star Wars about redemption, its about hope. Now is not the time to forget that. It hurts to have to watch this happen now, but it has to happen. Man, I really loved watching Roger Clemens too, even as a Yankee.
Lets just hope these baseball players can come back to the light.
