 | EU Release Date Ethics |
So I pre-ordered Revelation on amazon about a week ago. I figured since my wife and I pay for amazon prime I should make use of the shipping deal. On Thursday of last week I was wrapping up another book in the X-Wing series and I realized I would be without a book to read while I waited for Revelation to arrive. This is a big deal since I commute by metro to work and reading is the only thing that keeps me sane on the crowded trains.
So on friday we headed over to the book store by our offices. I was hoping to pick up a copy of I Jedi, since its a stand alone novel about Corran Horn, and he is quickly becoming a favorite character of mine. When I looked on the shelves of Star Wars novels I saw it, sitting there in broad daylight, Revelation. My first thought was, is there another Star Wars novel called Revelation?! I picked up the book and showed it to my wife. She was pretty excited for me, while I was confused. Doesn't the book come out on the 26th?!
I knew I was not going to run home and scan in it in my computer so people could read it early. I knew I was not going to read the ending and post a bunch of spoilers. I knew I was just going to read it, a few days earlier than I expected.
Still I felt guilty, like taking dad's car out with some friends when I said I was just going to head over to the comic book store to see if there was anything new. I did some searches to see if the release date simply changed - but found nothing other than the expected 2/26 release date.
I feel a little guilty about it, and a little lucky at the same time. Has anyone run into this before?

I've had a similar experience. Back when one of the prequels came out, my friend and I were at Wal-Mart and came upon the motherload of new Star Wars action figure shipments. He (being a toy collector more than myself) promptly gathered them up and proudly went to the counter...then his purchase was rejected because the toys were out earlier than instructed. So, I would consider yourself lucky and enoy it!

I actually finished it yesterday and I wont spoil anything, but yes I get it all the time. I have found that the only book store up where I am (Canada) that waits to release them on time is Chapters/Indigo (they consistently wait till the proper day). I have found though that many of the smaller book stores (I wont name them) tend to put them out when they get them. As with CD's DVD's Video games and books etc... most retail outlets get them a week or so in advance of the actual release date, most wait till the release day to put them out but like I said alot of the smaller places seem to just put them o the shelf as they come in instead of holding it till the release day.

Ive actually encountered the same thing for DVD's and CD's too. I have though pre-ordered books online through Chapters/Indigo and they always arrive a couple days before the release date, but in store they never put them out early at least not here. I wont complain as I am always eager to get new Star Wars books and getting them earlier than I should makes me happy.

It's a really bad idea for stores to put things out before their release date. If caught, they can be fined thousands of dollars.

While common, it is illegal. I buy the book on the release date, or later, because I feel it's morally correct. However, it's not your fault the book store left it out early, and as a paying customer it's their, not your, problem.
You got it, so go read an enjoy it! I know I will be this weekend!

See I knew it had to more common.

Yeah I do not want to name them either. Maybe this whole thing is some weird Karma telling me to spend my money on actual stores and not Amazon.

Yeah I never felt so guilty I was not going to buy it, and I was not going to tell the store either.

Oh I am! I am at page 170 or so, and enjoying it very much!

It's funny that some stores are so strict, while others don't care. They are aware of the release dates, so it's really them.

Good, good! Remember to discuss it here.

A book (or other product) appearing on shelves earlier than expected is a fairly common occurrence from what I've seen. While I'm sure there are stores that are disreputable and do this on purpose, the great majority, I am sure, just don't remember/realize that they are putting it out too early.
That having been said, I wish the Barnes & Noble closest to my home had it out early so that I could have bought it this weekend before going back up to college. Now I'll have to wait until the next time I'm home because I don't know of any bookstores (other than the school's store which doesn't sell such material) in the immediate vicinity.

Yeah it's definitely their mistake, my gain!

Definitely!

Well so far, it seems like it will be worth the wait.

I'm jealous you got it early. I picked up my copy last night, and I'm about 50 pages into it. So far, so good. I'm very intrigued by the plot. Most of the stores around here are pretty strict about not putting products on the shelves ahead of their release date. I have had Amazon deliver new books ahead of their release date, but if it is a popular product, more often than not, they don't meet the release date at all.

Yeah I am less then 100 pages to the end - its been a great ride overall, definitely have a lot to talk about in a review.

That's been my experience with amazon as well. Rule of Two arrived a day early. I think when Invincible comes out I'll be hovering around the book store that released Revelation early.

Totally - I am so closed the end of the book now. The head start getting the book early was great.

This actually happened to me with Coruscant Nights I. Much to my astonishment, Borders had it two days before it was due to be released! I read it early, but, like you, didn't indluge in any spoilers.
