Why Jedi Should Love
"But if you really want to live Why not try, and make yourself"

After an undefinite hiatus, im finally back so without any further interruption...

Love... Is it truly as bad and counterproductive to a life of a Jedi as the council makes it out to be? I don't think so. I'm here to say that the Jedi may have drawn the border a little too thick on this topic. I believe that love can actually help a Jedi learn discipline and survive the cold and cruel galaxy. It seems so unfortunate that the Jedi must isolate themselves from one of the greatest parts of life. Here is my reasoning:

First off, it is passion that drives a Jedi to the Dark Side and not love itself. In the prequel, Anakin definitely displayed a high passion which led to his transformation into Darth Vader. Had he learned to control his passion and accept life for what it was the galaxy could have turned out much different than the one we know. If ones passion is in line, it could be very possible to love while still upholding the Jedi Code.

Secondly, it can be very helpful to have someone by your side to help you through times of trouble and hardship. If a Jedi is lost and cant help but to think of constantly being in hostile and uncomfortable environments a loved one could revive them and make them see the warmth and create an open environment to discuss matters that the other Jedi may not be so willing to talk about. This is definitely outlined by the relationship that Luke Skywalker and Mara-Jade have in the Expanded Universe. Although they have some troubles to deal with they use each other to get through them as does Han Solo and Leia Organa. Both Luke and Leia are Jedi and they both are in love with someone and control their passion to allow them to love while upholding the main principles of a Jedi. This proves that it IS possible to love without falling to the call of the Dark Side.
-Besides whats wrong with being happy :D?

A Jedi's Life doesn't always have to consist of isolation from the human emotion. Right? Just some food for thought...

First off, it is passion that drives a Jedi to the Dark Side and not love itself.

According to Dictionary.com Passion means- any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate.

As I don't think hate turned Anakin to the Dark Side, and I'm sure you'll agree, the conclusion would be that it was love, as love and passion both mean the same thing.

Secondly, it can be very helpful to have someone by your side to help you through times of trouble and hardship.

Is this not why the Jedi are taught from an early age how to survive in isolation, and to use the force as a constant companion? ;

It's almost as if the jedi were afraid of many things even though they weren't supposed to act on fear. So by making love something to avoid they create ignorence and fear.

If ones passion is in line, it could be very possible to love while still upholding the Jedi Code.
I agree with you,stormtrooper-tk471. I think that Jolee Bindo had the right idea ;)

I concur. I have written on a few occasions how dogmatic the Jedi were. And this is one of the prime examples. Love is the strongest emotion, so it is understandable that the Jedi would try and ban it. However love is what saved the galaxy in the end and when you know love you end up knowing a new part of yourself. Great Blog.

I understand the Jedi view on giving one's whole self over to the Order so there are no distractions, but love is a very powerful, and defining emotion in most folks' lives. To deny oneself of it can do more harm in the long run.

The Jedi do teach love. Anakin explained this on the refugee ship in AOTC. It is unconditional love for all life just not tie to a specific thing or person. His fall came when he loved one thing more then all others.

I thought Anakin said, "Compassion, yes. You could say that we are encouraged to love."

But the Jedi Code reads, There is no passion; There is serenity.

The english language is not specific enough, they mean intimate love, man and woman. Because they saw cases like Anakin's, when Jedi were allowed to be married.

Did you know Hebrew and Greek have many different words for the types of love there are.

If you ask me, I'll just qoute Jolee Bindo: "All love ends in pain. It's how we deal with the pain that determines the path we follow. That's what the Jedi should teach." Or something like that. I totally agree with you and Jolee.
