A Jedi shall not know anger, nor hatred, nor love. . .
And thus did the Jedi Order begin to sow the seeds of their downfall. By forbidding love, the Jedi cut themselves off from something that could actually strengthen their ability to serve other beings throughout the galaxy. This would become especially critical during the final days of the Clone Wars because it was love that was tearing Anakin Skywalker apart. I believe that had the Jedi not forbidden love, they would have been in a much better position to understand precisely what was going on with Anakin. Because Anakin knew what it was like to love, he was tormented by the Jedi forbidding such emotions. Anakin correctly understood that love was central to the very core of what it means to be a Jedi.
Unfortunately, too many of the other Jedi did not. And when Anakin's emotions were in turmoil, they were powerless to help him because they did not know what he was feeling. And he could not tell them becuase the Jedi would have kicked him out of the Order. The Jedi were gravely mistaken in forbidding love. In the end, Anakin was forced to choose between his love for Padme and his love for the Jedi. In a sense, the Jedi literally helped drive Anakin into the clutches of Palpatine as he offered Anakin a way to save his wife, or so it seemed.
The Sith look inward for their power.
And so, Anakin turned to the dark side in an effort to gain the power necessary to save his beloved Padme. What Anakin did not understand at this point was the true nature of the dark side. A Sith cares only about himself, as Dooku learned all too late when Sidious told Anakin to kill him. In becoming selfish and greedy, Anakin was turning away from the very qualities that Padme had fallen in love with. The sweet little boy who gave with no thought of reward was gone, replaced by a monster intent on getting whatever he wanted to, no matter what he had to do to get it. And so the Sith would do whatever they thought necessary to gain or keep that power. Sidious would plunge the galaxy into war. Vader would kill younglings not much older than the baby his pregnant wife carried. In an ironic twist, years later Vader would unknowingly torture the daughter of the very woman he had gone to the dark side to save. In the end, what did it get him? He certainly didn't gain the power to save Padme. Once a hero beloved by many, he was now feared and loathed by almost all.
And so, the Jedi decision to forbid love ended up plunging the galaxy into darkness.
