As excited as I am about the release of Episode III on DVD, yesterday was also a bittersweet day. As I walked through the various stores seeing what Star Wars stuff they had on display, it saddened me to think that this is the last time we'll be seeing big displays in the storefronts dedicated to Star Wars.
Sure there will likely be re-releases and TV shows down the line, but I don't know that retailers will put the same amount of energy into it. The Star Wars geeks like us are the ones who will be really excited about future Star Wars stories, but I don't know that the public will embrace TV shows the way the films have been embraced.
Over the years, I've enjoyed going to toy stores and movie memorabilia stores hunting for new Star Wars treasures. While I think there will still be small corners of stores devoted to Star Wars, the size of those sections will continue to shrink, even with the collectables still coming.
In the end though, no matter what the future holds for Star Wars, it's been a fun ride. As Yoda might say, mourn these times do not, miss them do not. In the end, the Force will be with us, always.
