For the Jedi, It is Time to Go on Vacation As Well
As I alluded to here I just survived my first tax season, complete with 10-12 hour days and dropping off the face of the earth for the last 2-3 weeks and that was just before the income tax deadline, never mind the quarterly payroll tax deadline that we also contend with. So, after every tax season, my father always takes a much needed and deserved vacation. Now, I understand why. My turn for the time off finally came last week, so I decided to head down to Disneyland.

As we all know, Disney and Star Wars have long been partners. I remember seeing Pixar's Monsters, Inc. early on to catch the Episode II "Breathing" trailer. The Incredibles thrilled me with the Episode III trailer and the omnidroid. Last year a family vacation to Disney World missed Star Wars Weekends by just a couple of weeks, but that was the only time we could schedule it. Nonetheless, I did manage to pick up a Jedi Mickey pin. I even had multiple people try to pick up the Darth Goofy plush last year, but they were sold out quickly, and I didn't want to go the ebay route for Goofy as I had done earlier for Jedi Mickey and Vader Mickey.

While I had entertained thoughts of going to Star Wars Weekends this year, it didn't work out this year, but there's always next year, right? So it is that I packed up my car and headed down to Disneyland with my 21 year old brother. We're both annual passholders, so when we arrived at Disneyland Wednesday afternoon, we headed straight into the park. Many a time when we were standing in line, people were laughing and chuckling at my Darth Vader "Who's Your Daddy?" t-shirt from Hot Topic. It's one reason why I think Star Wars will continue to be around for a very long time.

I always make it a point to go on Star Tours at least once per trip so I can pay homage to the droids and make the Death Star trench run. When Disneyland opened Star Tours, it marked the first time that R2-D2 and C-3PO were realized as robots. The other droids are fun to watch and of course once R2 is lowered into his slot on the Starspeeder 3000, you know that the ride may be bumpy, but you'll somehow escape in the end because R2 always saves the day. I love exiting that ride to the throne room music from A New Hope.

This time around as we walked past Star Tours, I found a pleasant surprise. I knew that Disneyland would have Star Wars pins featuring Disney characters, but I did not know that Disney had made Darth Goofy plushes available outside of Star Wars Weekends. Now, my Disney/Star Wars plush collection is complete.

Star Wars Mickey

Darth Goofy

Disney Star Wars pins

Once we got off Star Tours, there were more Star Wars surprises for me ahead. Once in the Star Wars gift shop outside the attraction, I discovered a t-shirt that made me laugh even harder than the Vader "Who's Your Daddy?" shirt. I can't even begin to describe it, so here are pictures.

The front of the shirt

The all important back of the shirt

In case you can't tell from the picture, the crossed out images on the back of the shirt are a lightsaber, a droid, and a blaster.

The next day, I decided to check out the Jedi Training Academy. This is similar to the JTA that Star Wars Weekends has run for a while, but Disneyland has done something really cool. It's hosted at the Tomorrowland Terrace stage, which will come into play later. A Jedi Master comes out onto the stage and selects young padawans for training. He even refers to the ever present mouse ears as satellite receptors. After the younglings are selected, they are each given a Jedi robe, and a training lightsaber. The Master than instructs the younglings in how to ignite their lightsaber and turn off their lightsaber, nothing that the it is unwise to touch a real lightsaber blade, though okay to do so with a Hasbro provided training lightsaber. Each padawan recites the Jedi oath, "A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack," and is then instructed in lightsaber fighting technique. With the training complete, a great disturbance is felt in the Force, followed shortly thereafter by two stormtroopers that run onto the stage, preparing the way for the cause of the disturbance.

Stormtrooper arrives

With the stormtroopers standing guard, an ominous sound is heard as the Imperial March blares over the loudspeakers. At this point, the stage of the Tomorrowland Terrace begins to rise, with fog billowing out to reveal Darth Vader.

Darth Vader Arrives

Vader than speaks to the Jedi Master and padawans, saying that he has come to teach them the power of the dark side and that it is pointless to resist. The Jedi Master responds that the padawans will never fall to the dark side and shortly thereafter Vader is joined on stage by Darth Maul in all his double bladed lightsaber glory.

Join Me

The power of the Dark Side

Darth Maul

Every padawan then fights either Darth Vader or Darth Maul, with the Sith Lords slowing down and giving the padawans the thrill of holding their own against the power of the dark side. After the padawans have fought off the Sith, a familiar voice that even Vader has heard before speaks to him. Yoda informs the padawans that the light is victorious and that the Force will be with them always. Vader and Maul retreat into their entrance stage, and the Stormtroopers are left to have their minds influenced by the Jedi Master who has already gotten the audience to laugh at the occasional Jedi jests that he makes using the same technique.

With that, the younglings return their robes and lightsabers, and everyone then exits, with a gift shop that sells the very robes, lightsabers, and even Jedi Training Academy t-shirts just a few feet away.

For me, the Star Wars thrills weren't done yet. For quite some time, I've been wrestling with whether or not to acquire one big Star Wars collectible. I've always wondered just where I would put it, but finally on this trip, the Force was with me and I was shown a vision of just the place where I could place it. Storing the box is another matter, but I can figure that out later. I already figured out the important thing.

Jedi Mickey

And so ends the Star Wars related portion of my Disneyland visit. Maybe next year, I will finally head to Star Wars Weekends. Of course, I'll have to find more space, especially if Disney releases the X-Wing Pilot Mickey big fig to the general public like they did with Jedi Mickey.

They did a VERY simliar "Jedi Training" stage at C4 (and at C3 before it) where they teach the padawans some sweet moves then turnthem lose to battle vader...no Darth Maul though...but its so fun to watch!

Yeah, it is. My brother isn't a SW fan, but he thought the Jedi Training Academy was pretty cool. Whenever I get married and take my own padawans to Disneyland, I'll probably drive my wife crazy when I want to buy training lightsabers and Jedi robes for the padawans(that is if they don't already have them by that point) :D

:^O Love the T-Shirt!!
You are so lucky!! We went to Disney World for the first time last year and were so excited to come across Star Wars. We couldn't get into the Jedi Academy even though my two boys threatened a mutiny--it was the end of the day and the line was toooo long. Unfortunately we also skipped the gift shop as I was afraid that three of us would blow our entire holiday budget in there. Next time though, we will hit Star Wars first and plan to spend all of our gift shop cash there:D

:D That's just what I was thinking about my hubby. We do already have the lightsabers, robes and zillions of collectibles, but we always want more, even though we know we shouldn't.
Have a good one.

Hey, great recap of your vacation! I haven't been to Disneyland in over a-- well, too long. But I do ask my aunt, who goes every month, to get me pins. I told her to find me the Stitch as Emperor next!

And yeah, that shirt is hi-larious!

I know how the Star Wars stuff can blow trip budgets. They're things you never plan on. A few years ago, I picked got one of those photos where they put your face into a Star Wars scene. The CM laughed when he told me to look like I was defending Padme when my face assumed a very determined Jedi look. And Stooge, I can't believe it's been so long since I understand that you live down there. And speaking of the shirt, I'm very glad they make it in adult sizes. I'm 6'4, so I'm glad they understand that they are tall SW fans who would wear that shirt also.

Great entry and thanks for sharing the pix ... looks like a great time! And you're right, the merchandise can blow your budget if you're not careful. Must be selective ... but it all looks so cool!

Being selective in collecting anything can be really tough. I always make sure that the quality meets my expectations, or I will pass on it. I also want a reasonable price point. The Jedi Mickey/Yoda action figure two pack is $20, so I passed on it because even buying two Hasbro figures isn't that expensive at Disney. The Jedi Mickey big fig was another matter. It's absolutely huge, yet costs less than most Star Wars statues, which are considerably smaller.

:^O That's what I think will happen with my future hubby...unless, of course, he is as crazy about SW as I am ;)

Thanks so much for sharing your escapades!! This gives me another reason to want to go to Disney....I've been trying to get my dairy-farmer hubby to leave the farm for vactaion for years! Heh-heh...I could see it now....we would get there and I would say: "Oh, wow, honey...they have Star Wars at Disney? Who would've though that?" ...as I innocently bat my eyelashes ]:) :p

Those pictures are incredible!! I just know my two boys would just go crazy for all of that theatrical stuff (and so would their mom ;) Now, dad...not so much!)

It is so cool seeing 3PO and R2 as actual robots. I don't know how long they plan on doing the Jedi Training Academy, but I think it may be around a while since I see lots of lightsabers and younglings in t-shirts and jedi robes. And who knows, but your hubby may find lots of excitement in seeing his kids so excited. My parents did marathon days at Disneyland even when my mom's feet hurt so bad she stayed off her feet for a week after we got back simply because my siblings and I loved it so much.

I'll probably get kicked off the site for saying this, The only thing that I love more than Star Wars is Disney. The last I went to Disneyland in December it took us three days to finally see the Jedi Academy. I'm happy that they made the Yoda shirt in adult sizes also.

I think Disney is the only thing I've loved longer than Star Wars and that's probably because I was born before the movies even came out. I'm not really sure which one I love more, which is why I love collectibles that combine the two.

AAARGH! I can't believe I was so close to all of this adventure while in LA for C4, but didn't manage to pack it into our brief stay.

BTW, you may be getting an angry e-mail from Hubby soon, blaming you for the pressure I'm about to put on him to take the family out west . . . again.

And thanks for the heads up, I can see I'm going to have to bring lots of cash with me for all those goodies!!

If it's any easier, Walt Disney World is in Florida and they have lots of Star Wars stuff too. I don't know think they have the cool stage effect like Disneyland for the Jedi Training Academy, but their show building for Star Tours is a replica of the forest moon of Endor and Tatooine Traders. Disneyland's just has a mural painted on the outside. I'm thinking that I should post a pictorial blog from Star Tours.

I'm interested in seeing more pictures, as well. That trip looks like so much fun. I missed out on Star Wars Weekends last year when I visited Disneyland. I missed it by a long shot, actually. I left just before the Halloween transformation began. At least I was able to get a cool, plush Yoda backpack at the Star Tours shop. Congratulations on completing your collection. That must be exciting. I can tell you enjoy them. That's what it's all about, of course. :)

Disneyland has never actually done Star Wars Weekends. WDW has done them for years, but Disneyland doesn't have the space to accomodate an event like that. And while my collection is complete for now, they'll probably release something in the future that makes it incomplete again. :p Either that or I'll decide I have to have the X-wing pilot Mickey big fig.
