 | Being Darth Vader |
Darth Vader lived a life of torment, both emotionally and physically.
But why? Why would he allow himself to continue? Why did he choose that life? His life was a world of pain. Why stay there?
No matter how bad our circumstances are, we all can decide to change at some point. It's not always about how hard it is; it's about how great the pressure is to change, and whether or not we want to.
Darth Vader's pressure to change was immense. So why didn't he? He would have had nothing to lose; his love had died, the order he once belonged to crushed by his own hands, his children supposedly dead, and the man who drove him to it all was the closest thing he had to a 'friend'. All this was done in the search for a power he could no longer attain. Such a life would drive any weaker person to the brink of suicide. Darth Vader had nothing to live for.
The answer: even though Darth Vader made every attempt to alienate himself from Anakin Skywalker, even though he did everything in his remaining strength to make them seem as two different people, they both had one thing in common; an incredible lust for power.
Darth Vader's only drive to continue on was his desire to be the most powerful; a need that wasn't fufilled even after he turned to the Dark Side. This lust to be the ultimate tyrant ultimately outdrove his sputtering desires to rectify his wrongs, or even come to terms with the death of his wife.
He loved power more than he loved anything else, dare I say even Padme, perhaps even when he was Anakin; nobody Force-chokes their bride because they're doing it out of love, after all. He let his anger control him.
The Dark Side did not change him, it just made his already existing evil nature overcome that which was good---a struggle we all face.
And this is why Darth Vader chose a life of death over a death to preserve life. Darth Vader--Anakin--chose his life of torment. And never escaped it, even as he died in repentance.
This is the true tragedy of Darth Vader.
Not the death of Anakin,
but the choice to be a monster.

A very thought provoking entry. Well done. I think that Vader stayed with Palpatine after turning because he wanted revenge. At some point I think he began to understand that joining Palpatine had destroyed his life and now he just wanted revenge, but did not have the physical power(see injuries suffered in ROTS) do take his revenge. Instead, he bided his time waiting for someone to come along who could destroy Palplatine.
The interesting thing is that Vader could not have destroyed Palpatine even with Luke's help because a dark Luke would have destroyed Vader first. What ultimately felled Palpatine was compassion and love. Vader's final act was not one of vengeance, but an effort to save his son's life.

How true, how true... and for some it doesn't take much to push them over the edge, while others have seemingly infinite strength to fight...
Vader kept himself going with his anger... his rage fed his dark side powers... and he lived for power. And he wanted revenge against Obi-Wan...
He did attain a lot of what he wanted... Force power, control of others... the ability to hold life or death in his hands... but his pain and rage is what really kept him going.

Probably, yes. Saving Luke was his mamin purpose, but it is also possible that while making that choice, Vader may have had the sudden realization that Palpatine had ruined his life... that he was the cause of everything that had gone wrong... he may have relished throwing him down that shaft!

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
Much can be learned from the Sith Code, he lust (passion) for power, his shere will to suceed gave him strength, thus ending in the force setting him free of his setbacks which he overcame.
Nice Blog, it really got me thinking

Vader may have had the sudden realization that Palpatine had ruined his life... that he was the cause of everything that had gone wrong... he may have relished throwing him down that shaft!
Based on the RotS novel, he was very aware of what Palpatine had done to him, and he was aware of it the moment he woke up in his new suit. And not only did he hate Palpatine, but he felt he couldn't ever destroy him-- and in the end, he didn't want to.

For some strange reason, I thought the beginning of this post was a setup for a joke, but I soon realized that it definitely wasn't. Anyways, this is a very good blog entry, Vil Obasio. It really makes me wish that Obi-Wan or somebody could have somehow gotten through to Anakin before Palpatine messed him up so bad.
PS- It's not that the opening line was funny or anything, I just came in here expecting a punchline for some reason. I'm glad it turned out to be this interesting blog post instead.

Very good entry, thanks for it.
I agree with you. Anakin and Vader shared the same love for unlimited power. Anakin says so after his mother's death. "One day I will be the most powerful Jedi" ... and yes, probably what keeps Vader alive is the hope that some day he will be powerful enough to overcome Palpatine. In fact, this is what he proposes Luke in TESB : "We can rule the galaxy as father and son" ....

Good entry. I think once Anakin became Vader, his desire for power became more prominent, but Palpatine made his quest for more, or unlimited, power quite obvious. Anakin truly did his deed of turning through his love for Padme and his fear that Palpatine's secret of saving people would be lost at Mace's hands. It was a selfish reason he turned to the darkside, but once all was lost he craved the power to keep himself going.

Yes, I agree this is a very good blog! I think there were two reasons for him not giving into dying.
1) Even though it limited his powers, boy did he still have a lot of it. He was special and processed great abilities even injured and Palpatine knew this. And he wanted to live, even though he knew things would be different.
2) POWER! He always wanted to get ahead and injuries never stood in the way of his will.
He was determined and had guts. The power he craved was almost his for the taking.
That man ruled with an iron fist!
