Well, so I went to the movie last wednesday, not really knowing what to expect. Of course, being the longest book in the series, I knew Order of the Phoenix (OOTP) would be difficult to make satisfactory to one who has read the books. I think they succeeded in this partially though. First, some grievances:
The film started out with Harry on the swings on the playground, and Dudley and his gang approaching. Why? Why did Harry stand up pointing his wand at Dudley's throat like a mad-man with the other guys standing around. I cringed when that happened, and they all laughed at him. And the part where the dementors almost sucked Harry's face off (never liked how they portrayed that from the start in Prisoner of Azkaban, as if the cold wasn't enough).
Why did Harry and the Advance Guard apparently fly down the center of the Thames? Again with the open magic? What the hell happened to the International Statute of Secrecy, not to mention Harry already facing suspension from Hogwarts and possible expulsion. Why would they fly within view of hundreds of Muggles in the middle of London. It was just so stupid and unrealistic.
Then the part at King's Cross, Sirius joining Harry in the shape of the dog, Padfoot. Isn't there surveillance in train station waiting halls/chambers/whatever they're called?
Can't think of anything else really annoying me until the scene in the Department of Mysteries. FLYING Death Eaters? FLYING Order Members?! And in Black and White? OMG, who are the bad guys I wonder, who are the good guys? What a stupid way to do it. Also, when Bellatrix fired a killing curse at Sirius, and then he fell through the veil. Never in the fifth book (to my recollection anyway) did it say spesifically that she used the Avada Kedavra curse. It said that the light from a second spell hit Sirius straight in the chest. I was of the impression from the book that it was falling through the Veil that killed him, Bellatrix's spell only indirectly (although she's still to blame).
At the end, when showing Harry the Prophecy, Dumbledore asked
Harry what it meant, and Harry answered. Why did they turn the tables on that?
That being said, there were parts I immensely enjoyed, such as Immelda Staunton's BRILLIANT portrayal of the lovely Dolores Umbridge. Except for the parts where you saw Filch nailing a THOUSAND decrees on to the wall, her taking over Hogwarts was excellently written.
Also, for the first time since the Chamber of Secrets movie, the students were back to wearing robes, the lack of which in Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire annoyed me to no end. Why they wore muggle clothes at Hogwarts all the time in those two movies was beyond me.
Harry's hearing in the Ministry of Magic wasn't bad either. For some reason, they seemed to have dropped Dumbledore's half-moon spectacles, but for some reason (probably why), it fitted better with Michael Gambon's face, and he looked younger and less like a bum like he did when he first appeared in Prisoner with the filthy grey robes and the grey beard, which was supposed to be silvery-white. Finally I could settle with the new Dumbledore, Richard Harris' rest in peace.
Evanna Lynch (that's Luna Lovegood) was also brilliant in her role.
All annoyances aside, there's no doubt that it was a very entertaining and action-oriented movie, which kept my attention to the end. I've come to expect a couple cringes now with every movie, because the deep plots and backstory have to be cut, and things disappear. Overall, an ok movie.
