Reflections of My Namesake and How I became a Fan
I first saw ANH (it was called Star Wars) back in 1977 when I was seven years old. I remember watching it for the first time. Luke was soo cute looking out over the farm as the suns were going down. Then there was Han Solo. I really liked him. I thought he was even cuter (I liked the scoundrel, OK???). Darth Vader was an evil, menacing character (he was pretty cool for a bad guy). GL did not intend for him to come off that way-- he was supposed to be a fallen character to be redeemed in another story.
I became a big fan years later after the PT came out. Star Wars was all new again (you know the old saying 'everything old is new again'.). Well, I think it was the last movie, ROTS, that did it for me. After watching the PT, I have a whole new perspective of Darth Vader. As Anakin Skywalker, he was manipulated A LOT by Palpatine. Now I kinda feel sorry for him. I also feel sorry for Luke and Leia. They would never get to know their parents as they should have. I felt sorry for Padme- she died still believing her husband had some good in him. In short, I feel sorry for the whole family. They were decieved by lies and manipulations, so typical of the Sith way.
Anyway, I digress.
I became a fan of Star Wars recently. The more I watched it, the more I wanted more. So I logged on to StarWars.com and started reading the blogs. Needless to say, I was hooked. I chose my screen name because I was feeling a little Dark side that day. I like it now because it was kinda original for a girl. My husband sort of reminds me a little of Han Solo (I think that's what attracted me to him, and he's still that way). Our three padawans like Star Wars, too. My husband and our two boys like the Star Wars Legos games. My oldest likes to watch the movies with me, and our daughter expressed interest in watching Darth Vader recently (did I mention she's two??). Unfortunately they are on DVD and my machine broke:_| . Now we are thinking of getting Episodes IV, V, and VI on DVD.
So that is how I became a Star Wars fan.

What a great blog. It's funny, talking so much about the Skywalker family, because I was thinking the other day about "Jedi" and that Anakin says to Luke: "You were right, you were right about me, tell your sister, you were right." For the last 23 years I had thought he meant, "you were right, there is still good in me". I think he meant that, too, but I also think for Luke it meant the things he always dreamed about his father, from as far back as he could imagine: he was a hero, he loves me, he's good, etc. What everyone believes about their fathers.

That is oh so neato (I'm dating myself! ;)) vadersgirl33! I always like to hear how and/or why someone became a fan. Must be because I love history (as my daughters used to say, "If you love it so much, why don't you marry it?" Warped, I know, but they were pretty young when they threw that particular line around. ; ). Each of us has one, of course!

Isn't it great that your padawans enjoy the saga, too? My girls, now 17 and almost 14, have grown up on SW, and still are fans. Just one more reason to be proud of them!

I hope you get your dvd player fixed soon. You don't want to go through SW withdrawal, do you? A day without Star Wars is like . . . well, that's just too awful to imagine! :) ;)

Thanks for sharing!

Luke was soo cute looking out over the farm as the suns were going down

I agree wholeheartedly.
OK, I admit Luke is my favorite character in the entire saga (I am especially thrilled whenever one of the EU books centers on him :x ), but there just is something about that scene. You can see Luke's dreams (to be somewhere else), and his longing to make them a reality, etched on his face. Then he resigns himself to his current lot in life. . .and the disappointment of that realization is evident as well. . .all in a matter of a few seconds. All that pent-up emotion resonates in John Williams' beautiful score, of course. A blip in the saga that one scene might be, but it definitely is my favorite! :D

JMW out :)

I also love reading about how others became fans of our beloved saga!! I have written about this before, but ROTS *sealed my fate* and I was instantly reconnected to something I had lost for years. It is wonderful that you can share this with your family. I hope to do that some day when I have a husband and children of my own. :x

Should we be concerned that the bairns are always interested in Vader? Perhaps they can feel the good in him. :)

I'll be concerned when they have Anakin's attitude. I have a twelve-year-old that already does. Scary. My daughter really has no opinion yet of Vader. She's two. I just thought it was interesting she wanted to watch Darth Vader.
Oh, yeah, did I say she can pronounce it correctly at her age????

We have a lot in common, VG33. ROTS is also what did it for me, and I found this site and joined the blogs for the same reasons you did.

That's cool that your daughter is into DV and that she isn't scared by him. I have 1 youngling, she's 5, and she's slowly getting into SW. I can't wait until she's older and can really understand the meaning of the saga, and I can share all of this with her.

Well, what do you know?! You like Tall, Dark, and Handsome;) those characteristics fit both Han and Vader(if you consider charred or black metallic helmet to count for Dark:p ).
Thanks so much for sharing that story, it's nice to know how the "name avatar" thingy originated or evolved. ~Angel~

Even though I have watched all the Star Wars movies for years, ROTS is my favorite and waiting for it was really the turning point of me becoming a real fan of the whole saga.
Now, I just need to find my partner in life, so that I can introduce my future kids to the wonderful world of Star Wars.

I see that a lot of people have come to Starwars.com because of ROTS. I know--I was one of them!! Anakin/Darth Vader's story is a powerful story of redemption. It is so unfortunate that he died in the process of that redemption.
I see that a lot of you really enjoyed this blog. I am so glad you did!! I didn't know it would be THIS popular!!!:D

The more I watched it, the more I wanted more. So I logged on to StarWars.com and started reading the blogs. Needless to say, I was hooked.

Exactly what happened to me. I was in Iraq the year that ROTS came out, and was afraid that I would not make it home in time to see it in the theater (I just made it.)

Unfortunately, my wife is not a Star Wars fan (I have been trying to get her to let me have a life-sized cardboard cutout of Vader in the Living room!) My oldest of 3 kids is already a fan too (which really irritates my wife.)

Anyway, I am now in Afghan for my 2nd tour, and with all the Star Wars hype during my last tour, it felt weird to not have a Star Wars... something... so the blogs will have to suffice.
