 | * Secrets can KILL * |
" I will not let you give up your future for me. " PADME' TO ANAKIN IN AOTC... " You are asking me to be rational, that is something I know I can not do. " ANAKIN TO PADME' AOTC.
There lies more *meaning* in these words that meet the eye. Padme' knew it and this is why she spoke them. As much as her HEART wanted what Anakin wanted, in her MIND she knew it went against their Beliefs, teachings, and loyalties.
" We could keep it a Secret. " ANAKIN TO PADME. " We'd be living a lie, one we couldn't keep even if we wanted to. I couldn't live like that. Could YOU Anakin? Could you live like that ? " PADME TO ANAKIN. " NO. Your right, it would Destroy us. " ANAKIN TO PADME....
Even with their discussion on Naboo LOVE found a way. Love always does. Love; it is not wrong nor right, it just IS. Love has no barriers for beliefs, teachings or loyalties. It just simply lives amongst us. Love is patient and kind, then what of a SECRET?
They discussed it; SECRET. Still both decided in favor of it, and married. Love they could not help, but the SECRET was a *choice*. Both knew that the Secret was dangerous and it would be difficult to conceal. What they *didn't* know was that " Secrets can KILL ."
" NO. Come back.....I love YOU. " PADME' TO ANAKIN IN ROTS on Mustafar.
Even after all he had done; the *UNNATURAL*, the *UNTHINKABLE*. Her love still pleads with him. Padme' expressed that she could NOT follow his path and YET once more goes against her better judgement, begging for him to give up his *future* ( which was gone from the light anyway. ) and go with her. Only now the SECRET had exploded! No longer difficult, beyond dangerous with only a TARGET in view to KILL and *destroy* all that they struggled to protect; LOVE.
The Jedi Order demands *SACRAFICE* without a Reward. The Force connection is a priceless GIFT, that all jedi should honor. Not only in their HEARTS but in their CHOICES as well.
Anakin and Padme' didn't choose LOVE, they chose a SECRET. With that Secret Anakin chose their FATE. Was it worth it? His Secret was to know that Padme' was indeed *HIS*. Anakin's FATE was to *never* truly POSSESS his Secret; PADME'. Instead he destroyed all *THEY* ever lived for; LOVE.......
These are just some thoughts from an ANGEL, who is completely captivated by Anakin and Padme's Love story. I truly feel that LOVE was not what went wrong, it was keeping a LOVE Secret instead of Vocally Relishing within it. That is where it all went wrong, to dive in completely one must accept and welcome all consequences for their actions....... MTFBWY ALWAYS... As always...comments and opinions are welcome...

Great thoughts!!!! They even agree with some of what I think. It wasn't love that corrupted them. It was the secret. The secret corrupted them, and as I know from personal experience, disobeying your gift of concience, is going to lessen your guilt the more you do it. Anakin's guilt was Very Low, he lived a lie, it destroyed him. He wasn't aware of how bad what he was doing was. Padme did. Secrets destroyed them.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANGELICIOUS!
Nice entry. I loves your thoughts. Oh, and I'm completely captivated by Anakin and Padme's LOVE sequence. And say that since Anakin turned to the Dark Side to save Padme, but they couldn't have said no to their love, it was worth it for the time it lasted. They knew it would be like that, but they felt something that couldn't be ignored.

Good blog Angel. I agree with you! The secret was originally Anakin's idea from the lines you quoted out of AOTC... but then remember how in ROTS he told Padme- "i don't care if they know we are married"? He wanted to be free from it (the SECRET or LIE), but she then did not. I feel that Padme fostered the secret during ROTS and made it stronger, adding fuel to that fire insdie Anakin.

The secret was Anakin's idea, but Padme' went along with it. She agreed with it and pledged herself to love Anakin, no matter the costs. In ROTS, "I'm tired of all this deception. I don't care if they know were married." Padme might have kissed him then. instead of pulling away, but there was something that was bothering her, and she had to tell Anakin that she was pregnant then and there. She might have surrendered their love there, and people would know and the scandal would begin.

Another terrific entry Angel. Your conclusion about this seems very accurate. I've always paid closer attention to the father-son, Jedi-Sith motifs, so I never really considered this aspect. Thank you for once again enlightening me to another layer of the canvas.
I've had the impression since AOTC, that Anakin was more idealistic about the relationship compared to Padmé. Observe the tentative, unsmiling, even scared look on Padme's face. Perhaps Anakin just figured he would somehow make it right (living in the moment,) while Padmé was more realistic and could SEE their ultimate destiny (even without force-sensitive intuition.)

Clarification: "Observe the tentative, unsmiling, even scared look on Padme's face."
I'm referring to the end of AOTC during the wedding right after they kissed. Comparing her apprehensive look compared to Anakin's content smile. Sorry about that!

Yes! I've noticed that, too. She looks scared. Anakin smiles. He doesn't look scared, like Padme' does.

Anakin said "we could keep it a secret" & "it would destroy us". Like predicting the future again. As you say VA2 it's not the love that destroyed them it was the secret that they both decided to live under. Even tho his love seemed to be possesive & controlling, other love destroying qualities.
Observe the tentative, unsmiling, even scared look on Padme's face. It surely wasn't the look of a blushing bride. When I saw this scene I thought, IS SHE READY FOR THIS????

Hey there, birthday girl!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Ahhh, yesss...as always, Angel gives us all a very deep thing to ponder....
I, too am mesmerized by the love story between the two of them - such a classic star-crossed lovers' theme. I can't get enough of it!!!!
Secrets are the plaque that decays and destroys. It is clear WHY they chose to keep their relationship a secret, but although this gives some rationale to the situation, it does not in any way make it healthy for them in the end (as we all know...!)
Yep...once again I blame Yoda!!!
Actually, I did find some back-up to this "I Blame Yoda" - thing....(cont)...

Ahem....and I quote from the ROTS novel...
"Too old I was," Yoda said. "Too rigid. Too arrogant to see that the old way was not the ONLY way. These Jedi, I trained to become the Jedi who had trained me, long centuries ago - but those ancient Jedi, of a different time they were. Changed, has the galaxy. Changed, the Order did not - because LET it change, I did not."
SEE?!?! Yoda even blames himself!!!
.....Perhaps I need to get a t-shirt with a picture of Darth Vader and "I Blame Yoda" on it.....!!

HE WASN'T AWARE OF HOW BAD....
Exaxtly! All he knew was that he loved her, wanted her..and had to keep her safe. He would find a way to be the most powerful Jedi and remain married to Padme at the same time, he believed strongly that he could do BOTH.
THEY FELT SOMETHING THAT COULD NOT BE IGNORED...
Right! They could not deny the *undeniable* those that actually *looked* closely at them could see it! And thanks for the shout out on the B-DAY!

COMPARING HER APPREHENSIVE LOOK TO HIS CONTENT SMILING...
I always took her appearance as " NERVOUS ANTICIPATION " . I guess * apprehension * is similar. He is definitely *content * with his decision at that moment, for it is what he wanted...for like a decade by then.
ADDING FUEL TO THE FIRE INSIDE OF ANAKIN....
Hold on a second, don't forget their SECRET had changed completely by the time he came back to Coruscant. Now they were expecting a child! It wasn't just them who would end up exploited but the child(ren) as well. besides, she kept the SECRET only to protect Anakin from being expelled.

THE SECRET THEY BOTH DECIDED TO LIVE UNDER....
You got it jedilily, with it concealed it fed on the ugly . Like possession and control, it was out of context. What I mean that throughout the hiding, Anakin's longings and need for her grew to a maximum of possession that it could no longer contain itself within a healthy boundary. Not saying it's entirely his fault, oh no. He was *taught* that what he felt for her was unacceptable and he would have to let her go. Somehow, MO2YP is right on with this YODA thing...
AS ALWAYS ANGEL GIVES US ALL A VERY DEEP THING TO PONDER....
Glad I could deliver and hold up to your expetations MO2YP. Thanks for the B-DAY wishes.

great entry, noce again, Angel
they knew what the consequences would be, but decided to get married anyway
i very much agree with your closing paragraph, that the love didn't destroy them, it was the secret
it was that, but of course it was palpatine too
he corrupted palpatine, he would have killed padme, he knew about theior secrets, and he didn't care
he just wanted to control the galaxy.......
also, if i am hearing correctly, it is your birthday
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANGEL!!!

Hey there Angel, you bring up some good points. The choice to lie is never an easy one and the person should ask themselves, why is the lie necessary? Usually it's because the act affects his/her integrity and honor. At that point the person needs to decide whether the decision is important enough and "right" enough to stand up for publicly.

In Anakin's case, was being Jedi more important than a life with Padme? For Padme, was being a Senator more important than a life with Anakin? They needed to make that decision and stand by it. If so, they could have resigned from office and from The Order and done so. They were greedy in wanting it all.
Sad, but such is the soul of man.
Happy birthday!!!!

to dive in completely one must accept and welcome all consequences for their actions.
Right on. Ani and Padme wanted it all (marriage and both of their careers) when they knew that marriage wasn't conducive to that, at least not to Ani being a Jedi. I still think that they should have confided in Obi-Wan, but that wouldn't jive with the rest of the saga.
Nice entry, and happy birthday, VA2!

 Well, thanks.
THEY WERE GREEDY IN WANTING IT ALL....
Sadly, I have to agree here. Though I think that they wanted to serve the Republic and see the war through. Then maybe, just maybe ....what am I saying, then where would the OT be? Thanks Michelle 1968. and thanks for the B-DAY WISHES.
EHF5, thanks for the B-DAY WISHES. And yes, I think if Anakin would have confided in Obi-wan things would have went a little differently. Thanks

Such a good point, Michelle! Instead they CHOSE to keep their secrets and suffered the consequences as you, Angel, wrote so well!! Their love, for the most part, could have been wonderful (except for Anakin's somewhat bad temper ), but those secret's ended up ripping them apart at the seams!!

....Love is patient and kind....
Very clever Angel, a line from the Bible often used during wedding ceremonies. I see your CONNECTION !!!
Keeping with that secular thought, it's interesting how Anakin's fall in ROTS is often compared to that of the fallen ANGEL. Darth Sidious (Satan) hovering over the charred body of Anakin by the Mustafar lava river (Styx). Maybe I'm taking it a little too far, but man I love this stuff! A tortured man all for the sake of love - truly tragic.

I once read that "Secrets are why bad things happen to smart people." Anakin and Padme were both smart, capable, functioning people and they still fell into this trap. As for the love just being love. I don't know. I think that sometimes the purity of love gets all mixed up with obsession, fixation, and attachment - all of which is not love, but can be mistaken for it. I mean, how much of what they felt for each other was love, and how much of it was all of that other human crap.

His Secret was to know that Padme' was indeed *HIS*.
Isn't that a huge part of his downfall, the belief that he could possess her in a way that no one can really have someone else even in marriage?
Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not Satan, but I seem to be playing devil's advocate today! Nice entry Angel, and Happy Birthday!!!!

Nice entry Angel, I would agree with you there, it is the keeping of secrets that destroys all they worked so hard to achieve, there is nothing wrong with love, but when it is not allowed to be open, it eats away at rational thought, as it is always a niggling worry, and destroys someone from the inside out,

ISN'T THAT A HUGE PART OF HIS DOWNFALL....
Yes, but I stand my ground he indeed loved her. As the SECRET went on, his longings and passions for her increased to what I would call *overload*. Love can not be chosen it just happens....the lie, to cover up the marriage is what sent them over the edge. Every lie or secret in this case starts off small and eventually gets out of hand. Inorder to keep it hidden, you lie all the more until it grows so much ...it explodes as it did with Anakin and Padme. Thanks AS1 and for the B-DAY WISHES TOO

interesting.
My feelings are that Anakin was torn between what he WANTED and what he THOUGHT he wanted.
He wanted to be able to love padme, to be with her and share her life, but he THOUGHT he wanted to be a Jedi as well, and couldnt come to terms that he would NEVER be what the Jedi wanted him to be anyway and walk away from it.
Maybe he was addicted to the power, or maybe it was his insecurities, or his ego that wouldnt allow him to confess that he was in LOVE with Padme and hence could never become a proper Jedi....at least as they stood at that point.

First of all, thanks for this well worked up blog entry. Love is similar to the light side of the force as hatred is similar to the dark side of the force. Although, sometimes many people think that hatred is equal to love in the way of Shakespeare I don't think so. Love is that begins to speak in Darth Vader's mind at the end of Episode VI. His SECRET is not secret long since but his love for Padme and his children is completed and continuous just like the force itself.

I agree. All the secrecy is what did it. But it was forced onto them.
I look down onto the Jedi in fact. It's inhumane their rules and their arrogant 'you cannot love' yadda yadda junk.
If they lived a bit more down to earth things would not have escalated.
And the fact that love leads to the darkside is ridiculous, by restraining such things and emotions you actually push people to the darkside.

ViagoAngel2,
Excellent Blog!!!! I think your right about how the secret is what killed them not the love.....But, I think even if it wasnt a secret Palpatine would've still put visions of Padme's death into Anakins head...Anakin still would've gone the path that we all come to know...I do believe, however, that the secret did play a part in the death of our Anakin and Padme'....I just still ponder somtimes if Anakin and Padme' had not wed, there would be no Vader,or would there? That's a different subject Great Blog! Wonderful Thoughts.....

i agree with some of all this. Yes the secret did destryoy alot of things but it was still love, the attachement to Padme that drove Anakin to the dark side. Attachement leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering and the dark side. I think that even if they had let there love be heard and seen by everyone Anakin would have just been so angry about being cast out of the jedi order that it would have driven him to the dark side faster, and would have just made it easier for Palpatine to corrupt him.

The secret did destroy them like they said it would. Vader/Anakin subconciously knew that if Padme' lived she would turn against him and some how kill him. He killed her on purpose sort of. In the end it wasn't for Padme' anymore, it was for him. If it was for Padme' he would have believed her when she said she didn't know Obi-Wan was on the ship. By the way viagoangel2 and padmeskywalker77 are my blogging heros.
