I am writing to all of you today with some interesting thoughts (well maybe not to you? but I think they are. ) concerning the Voices of Reason or the Conciousness heard by Anakin and Luke. Obviously, these *voices* are more profoundly noted in the OT with Luke more so than with Anakin. Although, if you have indulged in the Clone Wars Vol. 1 and Vol.2 there are significant references of this made toward Anakin with Qui-Gon.

Also, in certain novels it is there as well, example; Jedi Trials. These ghostly voices or conscience are of those who have passed. It seems they are only heard by those who are exceptionally gifted with the force or those that do as Qui-Gon so well stated " If you quiet your mind, you will hear them talking to you. ".
Through out Anakin's journey as a Jedi padawan and Knight, he hears but not always listens to his conscious voice(Qui-Gon). We hear it too in AOTC, during the slaughter of the Tusken Raiders, as Anakin avenges his mother's wrongful death. We also hear it during the animated series as well, and in certain novels. Anakin does however hear his conscience and adheres to it as well in the novel, Jedi Trials. As he once again emerges as the avenger, he hears the soothing voice of Qui-Gon, pleading him to stop and think what will come of these events if he were to proceed any further with his actions. Though as time goes on (entering into ROTS) he stops hearing this so called voice of good reason. Instead, a saultry and yet tempting voice grows louder and begins to taunt and prioritize over the other. Light slips into Darkness.

It's intriguing. Both Anakin and Luke have someone who has past from mortality into immortality, helping them or providing guidance along their path. We all know that Obi-wan's guidance was more beneficial to Luke in the immortality sense. As he said, " Your destiny lies along a different path than mine. Luke remember, the Force will be with you ....Always."So, if the Force is with Anakin....shouldn't it be with him Always? Even as Vader, he is still with the Force, right? So, who is his conscience or voice of reason now? I tend to believe that someone else was chosen as well. There was another that would become more powerful when struck down.

For this person may not have had Force abilities, but she had something just as or maybe even more powerful. The gift of Unconditional Love and Hope. Padme'. She never gave up on Anakin, or love, or Hope. She took all of this with her as she died, grasping the jappor snipet in her hands, her soul never left his. In a way, Anakin was right as he spoke to her on Naboo in front of that elegant fireplace. " You are in my very soul tormenting me. " He foreshadowed his future, she was his voice of reason in his time of purgatory hell beneath the helmet. All those times is solitude, looking out into the vast blackness of space, it was her voice that spoke to him. As time passed, her whisper grew clearer and louder. For it was her that changed his demeanor from time to time, allowing Leia and Luke to elude demise. By the time Luke and Vader spoke on Endor in ROTS, her voice was as clear as if she were to be standing there behind him; just as she did on her balcony on Coruscant during the times of his nightmares.....she was soothing him, softening his hard shell like exterior....piece by piece it fell away. As Luke brought him down, just as Obi-wan did so many years before, he realized where he had gone wrong. Allowing the Love of Hope to flow thru him, he gave himself to the will of the Force and his true identity shone brightly once more. Giving himself, as Padme' and Obi-wan had done before him; he looked upon Hopes light with his own eyes and entered the world of eternal light and took his rightful place amongst the elite. Only thru his Love's (Padme') guidance and Hope, was he able to fulfill his destiny and remain The Chosen One.
