I resently saw a blog entry were someone tried to explain some continuity errors between two different stories, something about Anakins scar. I just took a glance at it since I'm not interested in the EU so much.
I'm a movie purist and I believe the movies to be the real deal and the EU that is something that you can consider or ignore. Sometimes the EU clashes with each other or the movie and I feel you can basically pick the storyline you like, for example: I don't like the NJO storyline with the whole Yuuzhan Vong thing so I chose to see that as a possible way the story could continue but not in my Star Wars galaxy.
I feel that an alien force that comes in from another galaxy and can't be sensed by the Force minimizes the whole Force concept. It seems the Force isn't better then a mobile phone. Works well in town (or your own galaxy) but you can't get any signal in the middle of the forest (or another galaxy). Wasn't the Force supposed to bind everything together? Life is life, even though it's from another galaxy.
Another thing I don't like is that the Emperor keeps on coming back which makes the whole Chosen One concept and Anakin Skywalkers redemption an act in vain.
For me, Luke and the gang lived happily ever after. I'm sure many of you disagree with my fairy tale ending but that's what I feel. Looking through the EU section in the Databank makes me feel depressed sometimes seeing how many worlds were destroyed or how certain characters died at the hands of the Vong.
What I do like is the
Clone Wars cartoons. I've picked it because it fits pretty well with the movies and it isn't "way out there" like some other EU stuff. It seems overall the EU material for the PT is better then the EU material after the OT. I'm seriously considering picking up
Labyrinth of Evil even though I've heard that it clashes with the
Clone Wars series. I've also enjoyed reading
Reversal of Fortune. I'm just waiting for it to finish so that I can read the whole thing
I also take a look at the EU is when I want the characters and other stuff to be more fleshed out like "
Aha, Chewie is from Kashyyyk" or "
Woah, Jabba is 600 years old". Nothing that exactly changes the plot or the feel of Star Wars but gives the character some background info
And onto explaining the continuity errors in the EU. I feel that anyone can try to explain continuity problems with the EU but it is a lost battle, it still ends up being an explanation you picked because it fits in with your perception of Star Wars, just like I do it the EU. Ignore the continuity errors and just accept the storyline you like. You're just making stuff more complicated and changing two differents stories anyways
For some, everything in the EU is official and I respect that but for me it's merely something that adds on to the story but you're not missing it if you choose to ignore it like I have.
Clone Wars, Reversal of Fortune, Incredible Cross-Section and the Visual Dictionarys. Now that's my EU
