Ok, so today I picked up
A New Hope and started watching it. I thought it was the right time to see it after I had seen
Revenge of the Sith for the second time.
First thing that got me was Owens contempt for Obi-Wan. Ok, so it's been there since 1977 but it hadn't manifested it somehow on screen during the Prequels. Does Owen embody the fear of the Jedi that Imperial citizens have now after the events of
Revenge of the Sith? Does Owen blame Obi-Wan for the fall of his half-brother Anakin?
Beru states that Luke has "
too much of his father in him" to which Owen replies "
That's what I'm afraid of". With the droids claiming ownership to Ben Kenobi, was Owen afraid that Luke would go out on a quest and fall or that there would be some Imperial entanglements? Owen and Beru must've understood the importance of keeping Lukes location secret. That could've have been the reason why Luke was held back all the time. Everything seemed allright as it was. Why disturb the peace?
I'm still not clear on this particular bit and it does open some interesting questions...
It's really when Obi-Wan enters the picture that several stuff tie in with
Revenge of the Sith. First you can see a slight recollection of Artoo when Luke says that he's "
never seen such devotion in a droid before". When thinking of their exchange in
Revenge of the Sith, it might not come as a surprise that Obi-Wan recognizes the personality of Artoo
Next thing is the lightsaber. Obi-Wan states that Anakin wanted Luke to have it when he was old enough, but Anakin had already lost it when Luke was born. This could seem like some inconsistency but it's not if we apply Obi-Wans "from a certain point of view" argument.
Anakin states that his allegiance is to the Republic, to freedom and democracy and that he will fight for it in
Revenge of the Sith. I'm sure that Obi-Wan must've heard of the actions made by the Rebellion and the Rebel sympathy in the Senate before it disbanded and what the Rebel cause was:
Fighting for freedom, democracy and to reinstate the Republic.
Effectivly, he passing on the stick to Luke from Anakin saying "You're father wanted you to have this
[so you could fight for freedom, democracy and the Republic when he could not]"
So, from a certain point of view, Anakin wanted Luke to have the lightsaber
Also it's interesting to see Obi-Wans reaction when the hologram of Leia appears. "
Years ago you served my father during the Clone Wars". Some would say that this is another inconsistency by saying that Obi-Wan didn't specifically work for Bail Organa. But he did.
In
Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan says that they are there to serve the Senate, not the Chancellor. So in a way, he serves Bail Organa. Also, given Obi-Wans deep mistrust for politicians (even Padmé) he does seem to respect Bail Organa.
He must also know that if she is talking about Bail, then that must be Leia, Lukes sister. Judging by Obi-Wans facial expression, he must think that this is the ultimate sign and now is the time to come out of exile and act!
We fast forward now to the encounter between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader on the Death Star. What stood out this in their exchange during the duel was the fact that Obi-Wan uses "Darth" as a first name almost. I think in light of seeing
Revenge of the Sith that it's a sign of deep disrespect from Obi-Wans side. He knows that Darth is a title, not a name. He knows that Vader is his name but he still uses Darth. It's almost as he is saying:
Yes, you are a Sith lord but not special. You're just Darth nothing else. You're a backstabber and betrayer and you won't be remembered as anything special
Gone is all of the "
I loved you as a brother" or "
I failed you" stuff. Obi-Wan now puts the blame on Vader, not himself.
Also, I must agree with one of the VIP bloggers that stated when Darth Vader says something like "
A feeling I haven't senses since..." that it is Luke and not Obi-Wan he feels. He knows Obi-Wan is alive, but he did not expect to feel a Skywalker. Didn't he kill Padmé? I guess that's where his trust in the Emperor slowly starts to falter which leads to the "
We can rule the galaxy as father and son" and the eventuell redemption of Anakin Skywalker.
I just want to finish of by stating that it's strange that Darth Vader can sense Luke in a battle but he can't sense Leia even when she's just in front of him. I think that points to that Luke is indeed stronger in the Force then Leia is. That leads me to believe that Leia does not remember Padmé through the Force but she remembers Queen Breha, Bails wife. She
is Leias real mother because she raised Leia.
