In the
first part I went through the history behind the story in
The Adventure of the Star Killer and the first scene on the blockade runner that was similar, yet not.
PART 2: UTUPAU. 30 YEARS AGO
Scene 19-Scene 32
When reading through this part of the script, you can see that Lucas left most of the stuff untouched. Almost everything is the same as in the movie, down to the very last word. Almost.
It's starts off with 3PO and R2 emerging out of the escape pod. There they have a disagreement concerning what to do next and 3PO shows a side of his personality that was later dropped. Remember last time when all R2 unit received the order to find Owen Lars and get the Kiber crystal? Well, 3PO also knows of this mission yet he says:
...to find Owen Lars?!? What's that?!? Just because the boss was looking for his brother doesn't mean WE have to look for him! That WAS the prime directive, but not anymore...
It's in contrast to
A New Hope where 3PO has no idea of the mission R2 and goes his own way. Here 3PO knows of the mission and obviously has somewhat of an idea of the importance of the Kiber crystal but will rather go against direct orders so he can survive. He has basically got a "Well, that's his problem, not ours" kind of attitude which seems a little strange coming from a droid. 3PO also expresses doubts over the objective of the mission (finding "Angel Blue" and handing over the Kiber crystal) which gives me the impression that the droids in the Star Killer are far more independant thinking then those seen in the final product.
If these kind of droids made it into the final draft, it would somehow slow down the plot, or that's how I feel. We would always be wondering when they'd just abort the mission or run of this way or the other because they are so independant. The droids in Star Wars are supposed to be the servants. They are below biological organisms. Lucas intentions were also that R2 and 3PO were going to be like the peasants in Kurosawas "
The Seven Samurajs". The would be the onlookers. The story would be viewed out of the eyes of lowlife. In this draft, the droids are almost at the same level as humans. That's the feeling I get.
The whole argument ends with 3PO and R2 going different ways, but this isn't before 3PO picks R2 up and throws him (!) onto a sand dune. We must remember that both droids were described as being
construction droids, so 3PO in his early incarnation isn't a diplomat but a construction worker.
Everything moves on as usual, 3PO gets picked up by a sandcrawler and R2 gets ambushed by the Jawas. However in the sandcrawler, things are different. In
A New Hope, we learn that Jawas are scavengers and sell droids they find to moisture farmers. The scavenger part is still there but these Jawas can be described as metalworker and the sandcrawler can be better described as a rolling droids graveyard.
R2 lands on a scrap heap and picks up a robot arm whereby he starts beeping in panic. This is another thing different with the droids, that they are afraid of death or maybe more appropriatly, being closed down. It is somewhat strange that R2 shrieks in fear when seeing the arm of a robot, reacting like a human would if they picked up a severed human arm, especially in
Attack of the Clones when they see a whole Arena droids being severed and cut down. It's clear that Lucas gave the droids too much of an human element.
Even though there's a feeling of a that several droids have met their fate here, there are still live droids around. We know this because when the sandcrawler rips a hole in the side, all the droids escape chanting
We're free! We're free!
The Jawas try to stop them but they get rundown by all the droids. 3PO and R2 make it out together and head for the Anchorhead. There they meet the Mechanic who they ask if he knows the directions to the Lars homstead. He gives them directions but is instantly suspicious of them and reports to an Imperial Tusken who has asked locals to report anything out of the ordinary. The concept of the Mechanic was moved from the Dune Sea into Mos Eisley and he became Garindan.
Of the whole draft, this part of R2 and 3PO's adventure through the Dune Sea has remained mostly intact with some changes here and there that were necessary when the plot surrounding the Kiber Crystal was taken away and replaced with the search for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
