Just taking a little break from the Starkiller series
This is just a peeve of mine when people say that the ending of
Return of the Jedi was somewhat a bad ending that left to many questions in the air. People usually use this to justify the continuation of the EU. Whilst wanting continuation justifies the EU, saying that
Return of the Jedi left to many questions is just wrong. Let me break it down
Firstly, I'll start with the outset that there's only the OT and it's focus was on Luke Skywalker. These are the questions that the OT sets out during it's course and subsuquently answers:
Will the Rebellion win? Answer: Yes
Will the Galaxy be free? Answer: Yes
Will Darth Vader be destroyed? Answer: Yes
Will the Jedi return? Answer: Yes
It's not until the movie has ended that questions like "What next?" arises. But this isn't special to Star Wars. It's the case in every movie. All the endings leave the question "What next?" so this isn't something special to Star Wars. But those peoples train of thought, there should be fiction after every movie so that people gets to know what happens next.
Really, if you think and ending must be closure then the only perfect ending for you must be when
everyone drops dead so there is no possibility for continuation. How fun would that be at the end of
Return of the Jedi?
"Yay! Years of pain, suffering and war are over! Finally the war is over. Now it's time for democracy! Now I go home to my wife and kids and start that orphanage I've always wanted and uuuuuuuuuuuuuuurgggggghhhhh *drops dead*"
Now, does the ending leave any questions in the open after the Prequel trilogy? Not at all, we can just add one question that gets its answer:
Will Anakin fulfill the prophecy? Answer: Yes
With the prequels now complete and in place, the story follows Anakin Skywalker instead of Luke Skywalker. It's all about the Rise, Fall and Redemption of Anakin Skywalker and with Anakin dying at the end of
Return of the Jedi, it is perfect for closure.
The question is never
What Next? and therefore it doesn't need answering or there is no need to even go into what happens after Endor. Lucas isn't obliged to answer that question.
And for you EU people, I'll hand you this. The ending is perfect in two ways:
1. It answers the questions for all us movie people
2. It leaves the possibility open for the Star Wars galaxy to be explored by others for you EU people.
Both set of fans get what they want! How perfect is that?
