Lucasart has just run an announcement that as new addition to Star Wars Galaxies is on it's way called
The Trials of Obi-Wan.
Am I maybe the only one to think that this is a bad idea? Should it really be Obi-Wan that guides you? I don't think so.
I know it will sound whiney and all but I think it detracts from the movies. I mean, Obi-Wan is supposed to guide Luke and only Luke since Luke is their "last hope". He can't be running around helping others.
"
Sorry Luke, I'd like to chat about your mysterious twin sister and that deceiving point of view thing but I've got another apprentice setting out for a quest on Mustafar, so I got to run. Take care old chap. Don't go searching for Vader without my permission"
Or what about earlier in that same scene?
"
You were our only hope...on this server anyway. I've got 15 down on Chilastra"
It kind of takes away the air of this being a special mission for Obi-Wan and that it is Luke who he protects. Surely they could've picked some other Jedi that somehow managed to cheat death in some way. Yeah, yeah. That goes against the movies too but at least it's better then having Obi-Wan keeping check on his numerous apprentices.
Don't get me wrong. The idea of being guided by a Jedi spirit is a good one and even better is that Mustafar is added, but anything then Obi-Wan! Please!
Looking at it like this, I think SOE is trying to shape their own Star Wars universe and they are going at great lenghts to do that. There are already many Jedi running about when Luke is supposed to be the last one, so hey, why not add Obi-Wan to help all of them? The idea of Galaxies is a good one. Any Star Wars fan would love to live in the Star Wars Universe, but the problem is that it isn't Lucas' universe they're immersing themselves in, but SOEs. So the good idea isn't really used the way it should be.
That's how I see it and I'm sure many would disagree. I would prefer a game closer to George Lucas Star Wars universe which means no Jedi and no Obi-Wan helping every Tom, Dick and Harry that comes running to him.
Oh well, it's really all in good fun I guess and I shouldn't be bothered about it too much, though I would think Aayla Secura would be a better choice then Obi-Wan. How many fanboys would go ballistic over that?
