With Star Wars being so popular and so many works of it being done, it is inevitable that contradictions will occur. These contradictions (some big, some small) could cause some trouble further along the line and therefore need to be dealt with. This is when a retcon occurs. There are some big retcons to fix contradictory statements (one example is the Ruusan Reformation) whilst others are smaller (Chi Eekway being a Twi'lek and not a Wroonian).
Of course, the Star Wars galaxy is a large one and I have compiled a list of inconsistencies that need to be retconned, starting off with the Prequel Trilogy:
Episode I : The Phantom Menace
The Death of Rya Kirch
One of the brave pilots of Bravo Squadron who is killed in action above Naboo is played Visual Effects Supervisor John Knoll. Two movies later, John Knoll reappears as Tannon Praji. Should we believe that there exists two people in the galaxy that look exactly a like?
My retcon: Either Tannon Praji or Rya Kirch has a doppelgänger.
Yodas bad face day
Yoda looks vastly different in
The Phantom Menace than he does in any of the following movies? How come?
My retcon: Maybe bad eating habits or stress gave him that face. Or perhaps he had a plastic surgery after the events on Naboo. Who said a Jedi can't be vain?
Qui-Gons girly communicator
Qui-Gons com-link looks suspiciously like a womens electric razor. Is that just the prequel style?
My retcon: I guess it is just how some stuff looked like in the prequel-era. However, it is debatable whether brutalising an electrical razor into a com-link is something done during a "civilised era".
Ben Burtts cameo
Are we to be believed that an older version of a person that appears as a young Imperial officer several years into the future is present on Naboo after the Trade Federation crisis? Or wait, is it maybe the other way around? Should we be believed that a young Imperial officers older self appears 35 years in the past...dammit, this is confusing!
My retcon: Flux-capacitator
Episode II : Attack of the Clones
Shaak in the asteroid field
High above Geonosis, during the chase in the asteroid field, one can see a Shaak drifting helplessly through space. How can an animal that is usually munching on Naboo grass on terra firma end up in space above Geonosis?
My retcon: I think Shaaks are not to much different from cows and all know that cows can get quite a bit smelly. So I think that the crew on a ship transporting these creatures eventually got tired of the smell and dumped them in the asteroid field.
Original Trilogy dogfight
At one point during the speeder chase on Coruscant, you can see an X-Wing being chased by three TIE-fighters some years before the types were created. Another time warp?
My retcon: Ben Burtts flux-capacitator is causing more damage than he intended too.
Rune Haakos bad face and voice day
According to official sources, it is Rune Haako and not Gilramos Libkath that is with Nute Gunray on Geonosis, even though the face and voice are completely different to that seen and heard in Episode I and III. What happened to Rune Haako in between then?
My retcon: I would say that Rune Haako and Geonosian cuisine/climate don't mix well. The strong Geonosian food could account for the deep voice and the facial change due to the strong sun. Why didn't this happen to Nute Gunray? Sunblock and homemade food.
Episode III : Revenge of the Sith
Hip-Hop Yoda
One of the DVD extras is of Yoda hippety-hoppeting with his crew of Clone Troopers. How can you explain this breach of character?
My retcon: What goes on in the Jedi Temple, stays in the Jedi Temple.
Screaming droids
Apparently, one of the technical breakthroughs between the time of Episode II and III is that droids can now feel pain. Why?
My retcon: I've actually devoted a whole
blog to answer this exact question. But if you're too lazy to read it, here's a quick run-down: screaming droids are a failed tactic to turn the enemy off from killing them.
Swapping lightsabers
During the intense duel between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan, there comes a point where Obi-Wan is pinned down to a table and has a lightsaber hanging ominously above his general neck area. However, when the shot shot changes, so does the lightsaber. So sometimes it's Vaders saber hanging above Obi-Wan and other times Obi-Wans. How come they managed to swap sabers?
My retcon: The Force works in mysterious way. I'm pretty sure that they were equally confused. Obi-Wan: "Wait, what is my saber doing in his hand? Hmmm...now it seems to have magically returned to my hand...oh well...Woops, disappeared again..."
Old Imperial Officer flying the Tantive IV
I can't believe it! Yet another case of apparent time warp! This time it concerns a person who in younger days served the Empire on Bespin but in older days is Captain of the Tantive IV, 20 years before he joins the Empire as a young person!
My retcon: I've already said flux-capacitator twice, so that is getting a tad redundant. Both of these persons are played by Jeremy Bulloch and since Jeremy Bulloch played Boba Fett, which is the Star Wars galaxies version of Chuck Norris, let's just concede that he can do stuff that blow our minds.
Sio Bibbles freaky hair-styles
Is it me or is Sio Bibble growing more hair the older he gets? I've got some pictures to compare notes,
Sio Bibble in 32 BBY and
Sio Bibble 13 years later. So in the Star Wars timeline, there's 13 years between the pictures but his hair isn't thinning out, as it happens to old people, but growing more and more! How come?
My retcon: Sio Bibble is a medical wonder. He isn't growing older, he's actually getting younger!
