Tales from the Death Star

Isn't it amazing....
I am in the middle of a huge project at work but, I had to share these thoughts from my evening last night.

Ever noticed that we are reminded of Star Wars in many of the movies we watch - I mean, do you get that internal excitement when you hear the Fox drum roll? How about when you are watching the opening of a movie and the THX sound bite is on?

My Apprentices had a revelation the other day. "Mom, why does the THX say Lucasfilm Ltd above it"? I explain and they are amazed!

So, yesterday evening, after a fun day off from school and work, the apprentices and I decide to have "dinner and a movie" night. Since they can't decide on a movie to watch that they'll both agree on, I choose. When they see the DVD menu for E.T., they are both pleased with Mama Sith's choice for the evening.

Then we're watching and almost choke on my food.

Has anyone else noticed that E.T.'s space ship looks like the pod that Yoda flees into exile in? Well, we did and the kids were in shock!

Then, Elliot is introducing our world to E.T. and he says "This is Greedo and fish face and hammer head.... this is Lando Calrissian. This is Hans Solo and him and Greedo fight".

Wow! Another blatent Star Wars reference!

Then there's the Halloween scene ... I was in the kitchen working on a batch of brownies for that one when I hear "OMG.... LOOK! It's YODA!" and I remember that Yoda does indeed make an appearance as a trick or treater!

It's like Star Wars is all around us, surrounding us, talking to us all the time. I can be watching a favorite TV show and a Star Wars reference will be made out of the blue. It's everywhere....

And we love it, don't we!

Back to work I go. Thanks for reading my fleeting thoughts. See you again soon!

GO SOX!

I agree. I have to watch that movie again. It's probably been at least 15 years since I saw it.

Great blog! I am constantly reminded of Star Wars in my life and it never ceases to surprise me. There are lines in TV shows, references in movies, and they always cause me to think of how prevalent Star Wars is in our life.

Living near Boston, I must also agree with your last sentence. Thank God the Yankees lost, right? The Force is with us.

Almost missed this!!!:O . I have to say that there are lots of movies out there that in some way or another have a SW reference. Amazing, isn't it. Totally blows you away when you think about it-- shows just how much SW influences our culture.
Way to go on picking that up, cuz haven't seen ET in a while.

Indeed.... It was a nice alternative to the usual. :)

Great blog!

Thanks! I am so glad that in all this madness called our world, we have SW in our lives!

Watching the last of it last night, I couldn't decide if it looked like the ship Yoda flees in or the Federation Ships that flee Geonosis! :D

After all, E.T. IS a Spielberg movie.... go figure!

We haven't watched it in a while either so, seeing the SW references was more shocking than the stuff we see every day!

My good friend Vadersgirl will disagree with us but, I think you are right.... WS, here we come!

Hmmmm.... DB's or Rockies. Well, for your fans, I would say go DB's but, I am routing for the Rookies. Before you draw your lightsaber, let me tell you that it's because the players voted the other day to give a portion of their WS and WS playoff profits to the widow of the minor league coach that took a line drive to the head and subsequently died.

Either way.... GO SOX!

I'm an E.T. nut... but I never noticed that about the escape pod before! And my favorite touch is that, when ET sees Yoda on Halloween, John Williams throws in a bit of his Yoda's theme on the score!

I've seen E.T. probably a million times and never noticed those references. Now I have to rent it and see it again.

Go Sox's === If it's not the Mets or the Marlins...I won't watch but good luck to them.:D

Hi there Lily!

At least you are not rooting for the TRIBE! :^O

It was truly a pleasure to see.... it's not something that we watch often so, I think I was more keen to the little SW-isms.

And my favorite touch is that, when ET sees Yoda on Halloween, John Williams throws in a bit of his Yoda's theme on the score!
JW is great, isn't he?!!?!

While we were watching the end last night, K2 says "Mom, isn't this the same composer as the SW movies?" and when I said uh-huh she said "Go figure"!

Yes, SW does indeed pop up all over the place!

It's so ironic that you talked about E.T.! I just rented that movie over the weekend for my Padawans b/c they'd never seen it before - it was mentioned in a textbook my oldest was reading for school, so we rented it and they LOVED it!!

Fun entry!! :)

I'm so tickled when I see a SW reference in a movie or TV show that you'd least expect, like in one of the American Pie movies, Stiffler says, "The force is strong with this one"; and in Cocktail, when Tom Cruise is learning to tend bar, he says, "Yes, Obi-Wan". :x

Monday night, on Inuyasha, he says "Laugh it up, fuzzball." Of course it is in translation, so that makes me wonder if the original writers or the translators are making the reference. Or it might just be a coincidence. The kid Inuyasha is talking to is indeed a fuzzball.

I loved it when the genius-geek on the new TV show "The Big Bang" hears a noise at night and comes out of the bedroom with his lightsaber ignited and shining bright!!!! Hilarious.
