 | Jabba's Hut of Wax and Horror! |
 Did you see it?
Did anyone else sit through the first two hours of 2008's American Idol?
I did.
In the second hour, I was horrified.
First, there was a guy, dressed in Leia's bikini. It was repulsive.
He waltzed into the audition room with a cloak on. When he opened the cloak, he revealed the bikini which perfectly framed his burly chest of hair.
Paula told him to go get his chest waxed and come back. If he did, they would let him audition.
To the judges horror, he did.
Seeing this person without the hair was just as repulsive and an insult to the very thing that is Star Wars fandom.
I mean... hasn't this guy seen the part of SW Legos where the Troopers are grooving out to the Imperial March?
That, I could have understood and, honestly, would have been pretty funny but, a burly guy in a Leia costume? It was a slap in the face to the SW Universe as we know it.
Then, a few contestants later, here comes Goth Leia.
Goth Leia?
Yeah.
She had Leia hair and that's about where the similarities between the two stopped.
She had on these black boots (which, were pretty nice), fish net stockings, shorts & a top with a belt which had a Star Wars buckle on it (and I was thinking - "I need to get me one of those").
She wasn't near as repulsive as the Burly Leia thank the Maker!
When she didn't get selected, she went off about how much of a dweeb and geek she is and my room mate, the lovely DPM (who posted a beautiful blog himself yesterday... ), looked at me and said "are we like that?".
Absolutely not.
Obviously, it was a total stress release from a grueling audition process.
However, all I could think of while watching that man's hair get waxed off was "Jabba's Hut of Wax and Horrors".
So, did you see it? What are your thoughts on this?
Mine? Well, freak show is the best way I could describe it.... and not only because of these two contestants. The SW contestants certainly didn't represent anyone that I know here in our community but, at least they had the guts to audition.
After watching last night, it certainly didn't make me want to tune in to Fox tonight for another two hours of Jabba's Hut of Wax & Horrors.... opps, I mean American Idol.
xoxo
Have a great day everyone!

Unfortunately I, too, sat through the first two hours of American Idol 2008. Every year I tell myself "Never again", but then I do.

Sat through it!
The second Star Wars representation was "Punk Leia" who is one of our fellow bloggers here. I had the opportunity to meet her at CIV and she is a sweetheart. Her usual Punk Leia costume has much more Star Wars to it. I was on the phone with another one of our bloggers here, ViagoAngel, and we were so excited to see someone we knew up there!

I was disappointed in the judges' reaction to her as I, for one, thought she had a nice voice. I thought she chose the wrong song, unfortunately, but the chick right after her had a voice that wasn't any better and she got a ticket! It's sad, I think. I really think Punk Leia was judged based on her outfit rather than her singing. It's just a persona she has carved out for herself.
The Slave Leia guy was gross! When he left to get waxed, he should have just changed clothes! Ok, say it with me, "EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!"

Hi Fan4yrs! Miss seeing you around as much... I hope all is well.
After reading the reviews of the 'improved AI" yesterday, I was expecting a better show.
Oh well...
I probably won't watch again until the auditions are over. I don't want to be subjected to the sort of show I saw yesterday.... it was a waste of time.

Hi HG3!!!
I was disappointed in the judges' reaction to her
I was too. Like I said, the only problem I had was the tangent after her audition but, after reading her blog this morning, I am sure that the 'tangent' was more of a stress release at the fact that the audition was over. As viewers, we don't see the grueling week leading up to the Simon/Paula/Randy audition.
AND, for the record, I agree! She did have a great voice!
I really did LOVE her boots too!

Funny you should mention "Punk Leia". I've been thinking about this all morning. American Idol likes to make fun of people...and sorry to say, she fell into that trap.
I didn't see the whole show. As I was flipping thru channelsI saw her face in the coming up section. . I remembered her from CV. Sweet happy girl . Her voice isn't bad...but just like HG said they judged her on her outfit and when they saw SW I guess that didn't help.
The thing that most p******* me off was Simon's comment when she was leaving:
"Give my love to the Wookie".
Thank goodness I didn't see the guy dressed as Slave Leia that you're all talking about. I'm not wasting my time with AI.

"I remembered her from CIV"...it should read. Sorry.
Don't be sorry... perhaps it's a premonition of things to come!
As far as Simon goes... he's off his rocker more often than not. Some of his comments are just seriously out of line!
The other thing that I agree with "Punk Leia" about is the other "girls" that made it through. They are nothing but cookie cutter poster girls.... they look more like they are auditioning for a pageant than anything else.
But, it works, doesn't it... it gets the attention that they are looking for.
As I've and many others have said before - only us SW fans understand us SW fans.

Exactly - a good friend of mine who is extremely talented tried out a few years ago. He never made it past the first stage where a group of pre-judges had him sing for about 10 seconds and then sent him off. This show is not about talent only - its a mixture of talent and finding entertaining individuals to carry the show. I am not saying this to downplay the opportunity or the success some achieve from it, just being realistic. How many people just watch the auditions? Reality Drama = cash, whether you audition to make a joke or to take chance, you got more guts than I do, thats for sure.

I saw it too, and I was also sad that it seemed that they didn't represent our Star Wars community quite well. The guy in the bikini (Ben Har?) was clearly doing it just to get on TV, as Simon made a comment at the end of the whole fiasco. I wish Punk Leia hadn't gone off in such a tirade at the end about geeks and whatnot but I thought her voice wasn't that bad.
I guess what upset me the most is that I have a hard time convincing people that Star Wars fans really aren't socially awkward, weird misfits and when I saw last nights episode I just groaned inwardly. They edited it superbly: they made us look like complete dweebs.
But...American Idol really is one of my favorite TV shows and I will continue to watch it.

I guess that's the magic of television, isn't it.
I much prefer So You Think You Can Dance in the summers lately... the quality of AI is just on a downward slide...
How many people just watch the auditions?
Plenty.... my room mate, DPM, actually only watched two seasons ago until his favorite was kicked off (Chris Daughtry). Last year, we made it all the way through but, only because we really liked Jordan.

Good ol' Idol pulled a hatchet job on her. They cut up her interviews into tiny pieces, cherry picked the the bad parts for maximum effect. Sure, she was emotional... but I'm sure they could have been nicer and more balanced, had they tried. Typical of television, unfortunately.

So you found that repulsive? I guess that I had better not ever post that pic that I have of me in my Leia bikini!
I kid, but just about me wearing Leia's bikini top.
I didn't watch Idol last night because I can't watch people being treated in such a demeaning way, which is what usually happens with the auditions.
So, Punk Leia made it to air. Cool. I read her blog about it, I do wish that I had seen that part of the show.
Great blog Wifey!

I typically don't watch AI (not since Carrie Underwood at least), but when I heard the city they were showing last night, I had to watch. I also met her out at CIV, and she really is a nice person. I just hate how television editors take the worse parts and show them.

Oh I can! Especially when someone like Ben Haar, who's just there for the attention, comes in. As far as I'm concerned, it's season seven, and everyone who goes on that show knows what they're getting into. You have to go in knowing that if they don't like you, they're gonna make fun of you. If you can't deal with that, don't do it.

Honestly, I think I represented MYSELF very well, even with my little tirade. Take away the buns and crazy outfit, the person on Idol last night really was me and who I am. I am a goofball and I stand with pride on everything I stand for. And sometimes my mouth talks before my mind thinks. I get it from my Grandma, God rest her Soul. Star Wars fans should not feel the need to see myself or "Man Leia" as "representatives" of a community. We come from all walks of life and are a multitude of different and unique personalities and talents. I'm glad I did what I did and hold no regrets.

Wish me luck while I sing on the Maury show next week in NYC! I've had radio interviews up the wazzu here! Something tells me that my bad audition could spur some good things for me. I will continue to hold my head high and keep my faith strong. May the Force be with you all!

And that's what 1/2 of the people watching it now look for, Stooge... other people's humiliation. Personally, I can't stand that.
You have to go in knowing that if they don't like you, they're gonna make fun of you. If you can't deal with that, don't do it.
I agree Corterville. I know from my 10 year old auditioning for ballets.... you almost have to go in questioning whether or not you'll be selected, yet not show it, so that when you aren't the heartbreak isn't so demoralizing.

First, I would like to say congratulations on having the b**ls to audition. I can't say that I would and I am a pretty strong person.
Honestly, I think I represented MYSELF very well, even with my little tirade.
And that's what truly matters! To thine own self be true...
And sometimes my mouth talks before my mind thinks.
 You and me both!

And that's what makes us so interesting and gives us so much to talk about. AMEN!

Dearest Aadi.. if you come back to read these... sometimes my mouth talks before my mind thinks. That was the problem, dear! I don't know if you remember me, but I sat next to you at the CIV blogger meet-and-greet. I let my kids stay up to watch you, then had to do damage-control afterward. Just remember that when you are in SW-mode, you are representing not only yourself, but the millions of us out here who cannot stand as a voice for who we really are in the fan community. IMO, your comments here do not excuse how you handled yourself...not just as a SW fan, but out of respect for yourself and your family. I sincerely wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, and wish you no ill-will, but PLEASE remember all of US!

Good blog. It is unfortunate that a small number of fans "represent" SW in such a way. And I speak mainly of man Leia. I'm sure non-fans just rolled their eyes at his appearance, and it sure doesn't gain us any respect. I like the show, but like you, I was disappointed in that segment.

I saw it too. I too met "Punk Leia" at CIV (kinda) and I was excited when I saw her on AI. I wouldn't say she had a bad voice per se, however I agree with hansgirl3 in saying that she should have sung another song.
Punk Leia (as your screen name is escaping me at the moment), if you're reading this, here's my advice... go back next year without any mention of SW. Do your hair and make-up like everyone else does, as you mentioned, and try really hard. If you make it on, you will have proven your point that all they care about is image, which is absolutely, completely true. Keep on rockin!!
