Death Troopers was released in October, which got me thinking about horror and Star Wars put together. As much as I have read and seen about Death Troopers, I can't seem to imagine this combination.
One Thought: So Star Wars is a space fantasy; most people agree by now. However, take out some of the story and the Force (hard to think of sometimes, I know) and it's a good amount plain science fiction. Now, imagine trying to make a horror version of a sci-fi book/movie. For me, it just doesn't turn out right. It becomes completely far-out haunts and freakish characters with characteristics similar to those of zombies, vampires, ect. or something similar. It just doesn't seem to go with the whole atmosphere of Star Wars.
Another Thought: When I think of Star Wars, I think of the magic of the Force and the interesting views of it formed by the Jedi, Sith, and others. I think of the heroism and story that goes along with each piece of the story, which builds up to a big, long plot. I think of space battles with X-wings and other starfighters. Creepy things just don't fit with all of this in my opinion. I mean, the creepy as in horror novel creepy. Deadly diseases are cool to read about in fiction, but I don't think it will feel as much like Star Wars as it will without.
Don't get me wrong; I'm still going to read Death Troopers. And the likes are that I will enjoy it, but I don't think it will be exactly like the Star Wars that we all know so well. I think it will be like a sub-world of Star Wars for those who want to read something a bit different. This is most likely a cool thing for those horror fans out there. Personally, I was never one for horror. I just have never been able to really get into it. I like fantasy, andventure, and sci-fi the most. Star Wars horror won't be bad...just not my favorite aspect of the galaxy.
So horror has a place in Star Wars from now on, and that's a good thing. A greater variety and something new to excite us fans even more.
What do you think? Has anyone out there read the book yet? I should be able to read it by the end of this year. Anyone want to tell me what they think of the book?
