For years now, I've been waiting for the perfect Star Wars video game. I've enjoyed many of them over the years, but I've never really found that "perfect" game. Some came close: Episode III, Battlefront, Jedi Academy, Obi-Wan, Jedi Power Battles, Rogue Squadron, Galaxies. You may see a theme here: I really enjoy running around and being a Jedi, or perhaps a Sith, swinging a lightsaber around, deflecting laser bolts from those pesky troopers or droids, and occasionally hopping into a starship and flying daring missions. But my problem is this: I've always felt very limited by the "level" nature of most of these games. Granted, games like Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy give you the option of saving mid-level, and that's nice. But most of these games are level-oriented, and you can only run through one hallway, or head one basic direction, and that's toward the end of the level, and that's it. That's why I played Galaxies for quite some time. It gave me the ability to live within the Star Wars Galaxy, buy some houses, earn some credits, increase skills for my character, buy a starship, and fight some villains. But the drudgery of the RPG system was defeating. The boring combat style of the RPG was dismaying. No matter the combat upgrade, it never got much better. At least, until the game was so technologically advanced my computer wouldn't run it anymore. I swear, every upgrade I've made to my computer was due to Star Wars Galaxies!! Anyhoo, I've come to realize (actually a long time ago I realized) that we need the perfect Star Wars game, and I know how to do it. What we need is a Star Wars game based on the format of Grand Theft Auto. I know LucasArts isn't against using this format, since they used it to great effect with Mercenaries. I'd call the first one Star Wars: Coruscant. Imagine running through the streets of Coruscant, and knocking some guy off his speeder bike, and taking it for a little joyride. Buying property in a Coruscant high-rise. Doing missions for Darth Sidious as a bad guy, or for Yoda and the Council as a good Jedi Knight. Being able to buy any kind of blaster at a weapons bazaar. Building your lightsaber, and running around swinging it at anyone who got in your way. The second one would be called Star Wars: Tatooine. You could work for Jabba The Hutt, steal landspeeders in Mos Eisley, run podraces in Mos Espa. The possibilities are endless. This is what I want. I'd love to see Galaxies fixed to work more like this. No more grinding for xp points, ya know?
Also, there are a few other games I'd like to see. I loved Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Why not create a game just like it for each of the other films? Because it would be great to play Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. It would be great, because when was the last time I was able to play a game as Luke Skywalker?? Why are there so precious few games where you can actually BE Luke? Weird. Also, remember Bounty Hunter? Why not make a sequel starring Boba Fett? Why can't I run around the galaxy as Boba Fett, one of the most popular characters ever??? This isn't rocket science, people! Get it together and start making some cool games!
Maybe they think the other episodes are too old to base a game on, because a game these days has to tie into a new movie to have big sales. I don't believe it; this is STAR WARS. Let 'em know, people!
