Triple Zero! (...for lack of a better title!)
So yesterday afternoon I got my copy of Republic Commando: Triple Zero and up until 1800 today, I spent the majority of my spare time reading. Overall, I read 260 pages yesterday (between 1330 and 0300) and the remaining 130 today (between 1400 and 1757). That's a lot of reading for two days (and I don't skim at all!), but it was worth it. So good!

And now comes the time to discuss! Except I haven't collected my thoughts together completely, so I highly expect I'll have more to say later. But as I read, I kept track of some impressions, thoughts, and quotes that jumped out at me, and made note of them. So I thought I'd just post those!

First I'd just like to say one thing: after looking at a book's cover only on a computer screen for many months (and on my countdown timer on my computer desktop), it is extremely weird to hold said book in one's hands. Every time I glance over to see the book, I'm like "dude, it's a real physical object!" ... very strange.

SPOILER WARNING... proceed no further if you haven't read the book and don't want it to be ruined for you!
Uh, and note that I don't really explain a lot of the spoilers, so if you're reading this hoping for spoilers, you may be out of luck. ;) I'm mostly writing assuming that the reader will know what I'm talking about! (Which is always a longshot generally because I tend to ramble, but hey. ;))

Alright, so I have a list of things I wrote out after I'd read the first 6 chapters of the book (pg. 1 - 145). This was at 1905 on Feb. 28.
---
The tension between Delta Squad and Omega Squad = whoa. I was so not expecting that, but it does make sense. And that tension microcosmed with Atin and Sev... dude, this is a whole lot more interesting than I ever could have imagined, and that's not even the main plot.

There needs to be more Fixer! He's only been mentioned a couple times.

Ordo is indeed a very naughty boy. :) But I like him.

I love where Etain's character is going!

I dislike Walon Vau, though I suppose you're supposed to (at least so far). I hope I don't dislike him so much that I feel all violent toward him though, because that's distracting. I'm kinda hostile like that. I don't hate a lot of characters, but when I do, I hate them. Don't know if Vau will be one of those yet, so we'll have to see.

Fi is just as mouthy as ever. I love him. :)

I love that I know enough Mando'a to figure out what some of the untranslated insults and the drinking song mean. Hehe.

Poor Atin. :(

I was very very pleased to discover that the Deltas speak in the correct voices. Like, in my head, I hear them talk and they sound right. That doesn't always or even usually happen with books in which I originally 'met' the characters elsewhere. But yay, they talk right!

There's nothing like reading about Etain wasting droids and then my computer starts playing "The Droid Invasion" from Episode I. :D Awesome. (Yep, I have a "reading" playlist which is all instrumental stuff (lyrics are distracting when reading) - mostly Star Wars soundtracks and various game music.)
---

I should probably talk about Page 187 as well. :) Ok, so I knew after Hard Contact that Darman and Etain would likely be getting together, but I had no idea it would happen so quickly! It's cool though, I like them. :) I have to comment on this though:
---
Etain: So... how long does it take two squads to finish their meals in the bar?
Darman: Long enough, I think.
[end of chapter]
---
Now I knew right away what the "enough" referred to, but I have to say I was amused when I was reading forum threads and some people apparently missed this. If that's not the book version of a "fade to black", I don't know what is! ;) Hehe. I mean, come on, they'd just finished saying they loved eachother!

I have to say, I wasn't expecting the baby thing, but I think that's really really cool. Mostly because it's sort of paralleling what happened with my Omega Squad family in The Sims 2. (I made a family of the four clones of Omega and had them live out their simulated lives in my game!) Darman got married and had a kid. :) Of course, his kid in the game was a girl, and he didn't marry Etain (because I didn't make a sim Etain)... but still. :)

I did find one thing I think is a mistake though: on pg. 253 it talked about the people tagged by "Fi and Sev", but really it was Fi and Scorch who were doing the tagging. Darman and Sev had live rounds in their guns and didn't end up shooting, and Fi and Scorch dusted the people. :) Just a minor thing though.

I love Fi so much. :x It made me sad though, to see him all confused and sad when he saw Dar/Etain. Poor Fi. I'll have you! ;) Fi also made me giggle a few times (though not as much as in Hard Contact - they've all grown up so much!). I especially loved when he said "So, did you have a good day at the office, dear?" to Ordo! LOL. :D

I have to say though, my favourite part of the book was pg. 285-288 - when the nature of "programming" with regard to obeying orders is discussed, along with the childhood of the Nulls compared to the childhood of Etain. I don't think any of that could have been done better. Wow.

I guess I should comment on the actual plot of the book too, right? ;) It's so easy to concentrate on the characters. Anyways, I loved the plot! Urban warfare is so interesting. (I've been reading a bit about it online recently, along with sniper techniques, camo, and interrogation stuff (I didn't know there were ways to interrogate that didn't involve "beating the crap out of the interviewee" (thanks Shan in City of Pearl)... heh). Yeah, I'm a geek. But reading and learning is cool.) Though there were a few moral issues in the book that made me slightly uncomfortable, and there weren't any characters feeling uncomfortable about it that I could relate to. But overall, the plot was good - had its tense moments but also some moments where the characters could relax a bit. That was nice to see.

And as a final note, I'd like to share an anecdote. Today, 1545: I'd been reading for almost two hours straight, without stretching or getting up to walk around or anything. I was getting sleepy from lying around on my bed for so long, and my mind started wandering from the book. Then I heard a voice in my head say, "it's time you took a break, ner vod". ... My brain thought in Mando'a without any intention from me. I've crossed the line, and there's really no going back now! :)

I suppose that's it for now, as I'm getting tired and I have a headache. Awesome book, I highly recommend it to everyone! And to think, I didn't care about the Clone Wars era or AotC a year ago... ah, how things change. :)

Wow. This was the wrong blog to post that in, lol.

Go ywingempress! I love RepComm and I'm just the same on you with all these thoughts about KT's new book. I got it the day it came out :D

I was surprised by KT's portrayal of the Delta boys as a rough-n-rowdy type, but I'm glad she did it that way. It gives them more depth. Gotta love Fi's wisecracks, as ever...

And I'm increasingly surprised (pleasantly) by the raw, human side of the Clones that is being revealed, and by their need for attachment, affection, etc. which mostly grows off of Kal. I'd better stop typing now or I'll hit the character limit X-(

jedivnsnator: Thanks. :) I was a bit taken aback - I spent hours typing all this out and the first feedback I get is "I hate clones". :O

Blue leader46: Did you not like the game? Or just not the commandos in the game? I still recommend you give the books a try. A lot of people have been pleasantly surprised by them. :)

Nice article ywingempress... I too got the novel the day it came out and finished it the next day... couldn't put it down!!!... I do have a question though... how did you feel afterward after reading Kal's reacation to Etain's revelation?... and clones don't suck... especially the commandos... nice job again...

I was very much relating to Etain at that point in the book, so like her, I was shocked at Kal's reaction. He did make some good points, but I can't say I truly understood his anger. It'll be very interesting to see how that plays out! I expect that the differing cultures will be problematic... Etain wants what's best for the kid and for Darman, but it won't be a happy ending. :(

Yeah Kal did make some good points that were hard to disagree with, which made me angry because I felt bad for Etain, but I'm wondering if Traviss revels what happens to Etain in relation to Order 66... can you imagine if it was Darman who had to do it? Or another Omega member? I don't want to think about that!

Ugh, yeah, that'd be awful. :( But there are two years from this book until Order 66, so a lot can change in that time. Perhaps Etain won't be a Jedi then, or won't be around Darman, or something. Wow, this book really opened up a whole bunch of new possibilities, didn't it?

I liked the game a bit, but it was too similar to Metroid Prime or Halo. However, in the game, my AI allies were so stupid that they kept trying to walk through boxes or walls, even when under fire. I'm not sure if they act like this on all the games, but on my one they certainly did. And also, when I was trying to work out how to get past a certain area, one of them kept piping stuff like "I know a good story to pass the time" or other things so annoying I ended up trying to blast the crap out of him. And anyway, I'm a Separatist ; , so I'm biased against clones anyway.

I really didn't understand Kal's reaction. He was okay with the affair, but surprised and angered by its natural consequences? Maybe he thought preventive measures were being taken, but still as they say nothing's foolproof. (Even, I wager, on Coruscant.) Heh, she might as well have been hung for a sheep as a lamb and just married Dar while she was at it.

And aren't Etain and Dar adults? Why do they need anyone's permission to make personal decisions/mistakes (if it was a mistake)? Maybe their culture accounts for this, but it still made me mad. (The "hey, lay off my favorite character!" reflex didn't help either.)

As for FAST -- whoa, yes it was. I was hoping for more gradual development there; you don't get to see them interact much the rest of the book. (It's implied, but offstage.) Maybe KT preferred not to leave that issue hanging until another (at this point uncertain) sequel.

I'm not trying to neg the whole story, mind; it was about a lot of things other than Etain and (though often disturbing) WAS good.

Okay well, pardon my rant. Thanks for the fun blog Amy. =)

Well, that's the thing - Dar and Etain are adults... but she's a Jedi and not allowed to have attachments (I think a child would count as an attachment) and he's a clone with no rights. Yet in the Mando culture, the role of the parents is clear and they take it very seriously. Etain isn't Mandalorian, and Darman is effectively a slave of the state so it's not likely he'd be able to raise his son either.

I think Kal was also peeved that Etain planned the pregnancy, without consulting Dar or anyone else. She said that she wanted to leave Darman a legacy, but I don't think she really thought through the consequences of that decision. And I'd say that was what Kal was pissed about.

But it's hard to know, as we only have that one scene to go by, and it was from Etain's POV so we only knew what Kal said, not necessarily what he thought. I guess we'll have to wait for the next book to see Kal's POV on all this! :)

And anyway, I'm a Separatist ;), so I'm biased against clones anyway.

Hehe, well that does explain it then. :) I can't say I've noticed my squad acting like that in the game - I thought the AI was pretty good, short of a few times where they'd walk right in front of me while I was sniping.

Why are you a Separatist? Do you just like the droids better, or is it more an ideological thing?

Cool, you're on. =)

I guess I can see why he's upset, seeing as he holds to Mando'a culture with religious fervor. He's not much into multiculturalism is he. =)

But I definitely don't agree with him!!

Ohhh one more important question. How fast is that kid (or any clone offspring) going to age? Is the acceleration genetic, or was it accomplished by some other means?

"But Mom, I'm five going on thirteen!" ... ^^;

This isn't the first case of a clone getting someone pregnant though... the ARC trooper, what was his name... Jango'ta I think got the real Jango's former lover pregnant in the Cetus Deception... I hope Kal and the Nulls find that cloner so that they can lead semi-normal life if she knows the secret to the acceleration...

I was wondering if the growth acceleration/accelerated decrepitude would be transmitted, too. That would make the Null's search for the original cloning scientist an interesting sub-plot if you put a Jedi/force adept into the chase, too. I think either Etain or Jusik would be willing to lend a sense or two.

I really like the way Ms. Traviss has added so much humanity to the clones. The movies make them so anonymous, and it is easy to disregard them. I think her books have made a lot of people think about the ethics of cloning; I know they've spawned their fair share of blogs both pro and anti-clone.

I love Fi! I know, I know; stand in line.

I remember reading something ages ago that the growth acceleration woudln't be passed on to offspring because that gene is recessive... or something like that. (So the non-fast-aging gene would override it.) I don't remember the source of this, and I'm pretty sure it's not canon (yet), but yeah, interesting.

Dawn - yeah, stand in line. ;)

LOL, yeah... though I doubt there will be enough offspring of clones for that to ever come up. :) But it'd be even worse than normal, because all the clones share all genetic material instead of around half like most siblings. Eeep.

Hey, does it occur that maybe Etain will be safely out of the way somewhere when Order 66 kicks in? That's like two years later I guess but... surely the kid won't be old enough to for training or leaving her at just 15 months old.

clones make me happy :)

Kal's reaction also threw me for a loop. I hope Karen explains it... (Maybe you hyperspace members who are allowed to comment on her blogs could give a subtle "suggestion" to her about explaining it...)

The Nulls, especially Ordo, rock.

The biggest subplot I want resolved is whether Ko Sai is found and the accelerated aging is stopped

P.S. Did I say Clones make me happy?

You know, just looking at the way they treat the clones and the fact that practically no one even seems to notice, I can't argue with you there. :)
