Okay, I've been away a while, so I've had time to read three more books! Aren't you all happy? I didn't think so. So anyway, let's get started.
First, I read
Wedge's Gamble by Michael A. Stackpole, the second in the X-Wing series. As far as sequels go, this one's one of the best. In my opinion, it tops
Rogue Squadron, its prequel. For the first time we get sections from Gavin's point of view, instead of just Wedge, Corran, and Kirtan Loor. The disguised infiltration of Coruscant was exciting, and it showed a side of the Star Wars universe not often seen: the Empire's attempt to cover up their devastating defeat at Endor. Perhaps the only bad thing about the book was the cliffhanger ending. Corran is chained naked to a table. I'm anxious to find out what happens to him, though I know it can't be bad, because I just read
Dark Tide I, and he's alive in that.
Next on the list is
Vector Prime by R. A. Salvatore. I think it was a good idea to bring in a rookie to the Star Wars universe to write the first of the New Jedi Order books, because it brought a fresh style that got me hooked on the series like a drug. Though it seemed unfair to the other seasoned Star Wars authors that a newbie is the one to kill off Chewbacca, but oh well, he did a good job on it.
Finally, I read
Dark Tide: Onslaught by Michael A. Stackpole (he's now one of my two favorite authors, along with Timothy Zahn). It was an excellent follow-up to
Vector Prime storywise, and with Stackpole's distinctive style along with it, it is almost the perfect novel. I kind of phased out for a chapter or two in the middle while reading it, so I'm not sure I got the whole plot. I might need to skim back through it, but I think I got the gist of it. Poor Bolpuhr...
Well, that's it for now. I think I'll be back soon, because I'm on page one-seventy-somthing of
Dark Tide II. Happy holidays, everyone!
