Lord of the Rings: Evolution
Now that the cat's out of the bag, the time for hinting is over . . .

Like many of the other Official Star Wars Artists who have blogs here, I'll be contributing 1000 (yes, one thousand) hand-drawn sketch cards to the new Lord of the Rings trading card line from Topps. The line will be dubbed, "Evolution". No idea why, but I couldn't be more excited about this illustration gig.

Here is a full list of artists contributing to Evolution (I've included links to those with blogs here at Star Wars.com):

I'm late to the party where Rings is concerned, having never read the books growing up. In fact . . . I just became a fan of the film versions this last year, after watching all 3 Extended Edition DVDs in a single day. Before that, I was something of a Rings detractor. I liked Fellowship (it's still my favorite of the three), thought The Two Towers was a step down in quality, and savaged Return of the King after seeing it in the theater (some of my online pals still haven't forgiven me for that one).

I'll admit, part of the reason I was so hard on the Rings films was out of pure, green envy . . . I hated that these films were taking so much attention away from my beloved Star Wars prequels. My team was apparently losing, and my colors showed in the way I reacted to the films upon my initial viewings.

But with each Extended Edition DVD I viewed (in the comfort of my home, on a great home theater, and able to take breaks when I wanted), I grew to enjoy and understand the films better. After seeing Return of the King EE DVD, I finally saw the light. I had a religious-geek conversion, if you will.

Here is my post from a message board after watching the Return of the King DVD in December of 2004:

"Okay, I just finished watching the ROTK EE DVD (watched all 3 EE DVDs in a row today, actually). So if anyone has any questions about the new (vastly improved) cut of the film, fire away.

I may write some kind of review of the final version of these films, but here's the short version: I'm a Rings fan now. I see it. I get it. Watching all of the EE DVDs in a row was an eye opener, and I can honestly say I look forward to repeating the experience someday."

I've watched the films about 4 or 5 times since then (all 3 over the course of about a week, each time). And I've grown into a real Rings fan.

I think my reaction to/disappointment with Revenge of the Sith really opened my eyes to why I was so hard on the Rings films at first, and I'm embarrassed to admit that I was being so petty about a series of movies. Oh well, live and learn.

Anyway, that's my history with the Lord of the Rings films. And it's wonderful that now that I'm finally a fan, I get to actually contribute to this new card line. I'm already hard at work drawing cards, and I'm really happy with how they're coming along. My new love for these films is showing in the work, and I'm experiencing real joy in drawing again (something I haven't felt in a while).

I'll post scans of the cards at my website or personal blog when I can. Topps isn't letting us show any of them yet, but I can't wait to pull back the curtain on the work I'm doing. You can see a bit what I'm doing style-wise in the sketches I posted a few days ago on my personal blog. Those were some warm-up drawings before actually starting work on the cards.

Speaking of which, it's time for me to get back to working on them.

One thousand cards . . . December is going to be a LONG month.

The Balrog looks a bit... furry rather than flamey to me. Maybe I've just been looking at too many Wookiees :p

Love the Mouth of Sauron though, probably the scene I wish most had made it into the "normal" cut despite it not having the same tension as in the book due to the film following Frodo through the whole thing and the audience knowing for sure he's not dead.

Best of luck making all 1000 without killing yourselves (I'm sure you'll have split personalities by the end).

Because it's related to the reason I'm an "Official Lucasfilm-Approved Artist" and a VIP here at the SW.com blogs. I'm here because I contributed 400 hand-drawn cards to the Revenge of the Sith sketch cards which were randomly inserted into packs of Episode III trading cards earlier this year. This new line of sketch cards is being worked on by many of the same artists who worked on the Star Wars line, including me. I thought people would be interested in learning more about it.

Continued in next comment . . .

I realize this is a blog on Star Wars.com, but this is also MY blog on Star Wars.com, and therefore I have every right to discuss topics which a)are related to why I'm a VIP here and b) are related to projects worked on by Lucasfilm-Approved Artists. I apologize if even the mere mention of the Rings films offends you. Feel free to not read this blog ever again.

Thanks.

That and people are free to use their StarWars.com blog for whatever they wish.

Star Wars is a common thread across these blogs since we're all Star Wars fans (or related to Star Wars in the case of VIP blogs, though many of them are also fans :) ) however you're completely free to post something completely non-Star Wars related. Will this be interesting to your Average Joe Star Wars fan? Maybe not. But you may strike a chord with a reader who takes the time to read it.

As it happens there may be some cross-fans such as I who enjoyed Lord of the Rings and enjoy seeing where people who work on something Star Wars are also working.

...or seemingly short on time. wow...can't get over the number.

The Hobbit, Fellowship et al. were my first "fan" favorites when I was 7 and 8 and remained that way until '77...then they were all but forgotten. When the movies arrived I had an interesting reaction. Guilt. There was a big part of me that enjoyed them so much that I felt as if I was cheating on Star Wars. :p

I toyed (a fleetingly brief micro-moment) with the notion of building a LOTR website. Scary.

Can't wait to see the cards...yours and everyone else's! Have fun!!

Rive . . .

Thanks for backing me up. The other reason I felt it was appropriate to post about this here is the way my reaction to Rings was affected/tainted by my love of the Star Wars prequels. It was a tough few years there, being a Star Wars fan surrounded by Rings afficionados gloating over me with all of those Academy Award nominations. Like I said, live and learn.

Leah . . .

I've seen a lot of the cards already (we can't show the public, but we can show each other) and this set is, IMHO, even better than the Star Wars line. The artists involved are doing great work. I can't wait for people to see some of the stuff these talented guys and gals are pumping out. :D

The whole group oozes with talent :D *chills* Now I'm really excited!

It really is neat to be able to look forward to such things.

PS - he did the same to me on one of my blog posts. :p One cannot be SW 100% of the time, hehe, no matter how strong the tug is. ;) Diversification is a very healthy thing.

Who would want to be SW 100% of the time anyway? For me, anything LFL is a slice of fried gold (listening to the god like Raiders soundtrack right now) but am also a BIG LOTR fan. adore Trek in all its forms, am a Buffy and Angel fan, drooled over Firefly and Serenity.
Otis mate, you write what the hell you like. It's YOUR blog (so no need for apologies) and as an official artist, like you say, related projects are inherrently of interest to us guys and geeks that follow such stuff.
BTW, have mailed you re: an interview on my site Lightsabre. Hope you'll be available. I might even ask you about your LOTR work...:p
